It is the great While Fast, when, abstaining from all. food,- from sundown to Bundown. the people of Is rael Vaffl'Ct their souls" for the sins of the past yesr.-.-;:: v ' . . ' The holy day is mentioned; in the Bi ble in a number of places; Leviticus'xvi describes the elaborate priestly ceremo nial of atonement; ibid Xxiif. 26-32, it appears jn Jthe list of festivals where thtf "affliction of the soul" (fastinp ) is ordained; ibid xxv; 9 announces that on the Day of . Atonement, eaeh fiftieth year, the trumpet sound shall usher in the jubilee year; while Numbers xxix, 7-11 describes the sacrifices of. this sa cred day. . From these references and later accounts in the Talmu i we can get a picture of this Day of Awe as it Was celebrated in Biblical times. The holy day on the tenth day of 1 iahri wag observed by abstention "from food and drink and by an elaborate ceremonial in which the high priest' was the ceotral figure.. He besought forgiveness for his own sins and those of his own house hold; then for thoe of the wider house hold.of priests, then for all the people. Of two goats he slaughtered one ai a sacrifice "for the Lord" and set the other aside "for Azizel." The blood' of-the sacrifices he sprinkled upon the curtain of the Ilnly of Holies, to puri fy it from the sins of the people. From this Biblical ceremonial which throughout seeks for forgiveness of the community as a whole, the Day of Atonement has been somewhat changed iffSabbinicTudaTSra'a the modern service and emphasizes also repentance and persona! prayer for the forgiveness of each individual sinning soul. It com pletes the penitential period of tepdays that bad begun with the1 New Year s Day. . - The celebration of the Day of Atone ment begins in the synagogue with the evening service, called Kal Nidre from i M opening formula, which refers to viowa concerning the indivinual and. his conscience i With' its strongly marked melodies .ana songs,- this, service as suruid in the" course of time a very im pr Sivo cbaracter., - Tbroughout the followirg ily -a continuous series of services held, Which toward the mid' die of tlie Viernoon 'is heightened in fmpressivet ess by a most solemn com' merrtbrativa service for the deal This it followed by tEe Neilah or closing ser vice in which the main ileaa of the day sra especially emphasieed; repentance conditioning forgiveness 'and God's seal ing the decree of man . for. the, ensuing vear.- The service ends with a solemn invocation of God's name, the Sheros j fe .1 and the seven fold exclamation.
