A two week's term of Craven County Superior Court for the trial of both criminal and civil caes onvened in this city yesterday morning with .Iude Frank Carter of Asheville presiding. The first week will be consumed in the hearing of the riiminal cases while the second week will be laktae up with the civil cajes. At the opening of the session the fid lowing grand jury was chosen: E. W. Wadsworth, A. C. Uolton, G A. Wood, Ge . F. Pearc , John Gatlin, J is. L Taylor, W. H. Smith, L. A. Foy, W. P, Ballangier, N. M. Farcow, foreman, R. O. Godley, T. M. t'aton. Freeman Aveiy, H. C. Ipock, Henry Lewis, T. W. Alee, C. F. Pate and T. W. West. In his charge to the grand jury, Judge Clark called their attention to the great wave of crime which has swept across the p(ate during the past few months and urged them to do their duty in bringing old violators of the law to ju.tice. He touched on a number of the most vital points of criminal law in a clear and concise man ner and made not' only a lasting impres sion on the grand jury hut also upon all who heard, him. He bitterly d nounced theillicit fhjuor dealers and the pistol toters and said that if they were sever ely dealt with both of these violations would soon become a thing of the past. Mr. W. D. Mclver, attorney for Bur nil Casey, askrd that the two cases be 1 ried seuerately. That his wife Leonai Casey, be tried on one warrant and that; Bun ill Carey be tried on another, i Owing to the fact that but a few days ' will be allowed for the trial of this case the request was denietl. Bel lie Kennedy charged with larceny was allowed to take tie pauper oath and was releas ed from custody on ac count of her child being in a bad physi cal condition. The case of John E Hussey, ch irged with an assault was next called.
