Washington. Nov. 9-The Stanley
committee, which is investigating the
United States Stel Corporation, has
positive evidence that Amenctn rail
roads have to piy about $10 a ton more
for rails than foreign road do. Th'.s
fact will be brought out when the com
mittee resumes its hearing Nov, 2),
Kails made by th Besiemer process
sell for $28 here and $20 abroad". Open
r earth rails vary in price ranging from
$29 to $31.50, but the foreigner gets a
much better rate than the domestic
customer.
"he price of the Bessemer rail is fix
ed by the Steel Trust by inUr-looking
directors. The Stanley committee will
prove this also.
Two seta of freight charges help the
foreigner. An all-rail shipment to New
York from Pittsnurg goes at the rate
of )6 cents a hundred. The tame ship
ment, if it is on its ways across the
ocean, gors to New York for 10 cents a
hundred, making a difference of $1 20 a
ton in favor of the foreign consumer.
I'he domestic consumer pays the dif
ference between $38 an I $20 plus the
difference, in the ch trge for a ton of
foreign-bound and a domestic shipment
"f freight.
The Sf anley c mmittee will show that
the p ice of billdts, btrs, rods and
plates vary, but the pi ices of rails does
not unless the big Steel Corporation so
wills it. Steel bars have varied several
dollar a ton inside of six months.
The United States Steel Corporation,
hi Pennsylvania Company, the Cam
bria Suel Company, the Lackawanna
Company, the Bethlehem Steel Com
pany and the Colorado Steel and Iron
Company are virtually the only makers
ofutiel railfc in this country.- Other
concerns remake rails take a ninety
liO'jiid rail, for instance, and cnnveit it
i t) a lighter rail, but the roropardaa
named here are the real rail makers
and they hive inte locking dirtc'ora.
The Stanley c mm tree wi I go into
ihe labor conditions at the Steel Trust
I lanls. It will show that the American
laborer has given was to the foreigner
at fba m nes, the nrlls and th? factor
ies of the big corporation. Where na
tives worked before tha di.y of the
Uni tad States Steel Corporation, for
eigners work n w. The labor union
ojn has been driven (ut of the employ
of the tetl Trust. Evidence has been
found to prove that the Steel Corpora
tion haj advertised for R luinanians and
Servian-!, ttating that thi y were pre
ferred to Americans. Cnairman Stanley
iml his assistants gathered thei-e factn
since Congresi kdjoirneJ.
