SOME FEATURES OF TUES DAY'S ELECTION. Anti-election prophecies and post election returns, seldom concide, and last Tuesday's elections in a measure proved this. Also be fore election predictions as to the effect of the political vote on party aspirants for future nominations, are after an unfavorable vote, quickly ignored and denied. Last Tuesday's election illustrated this. A nou-presidential year, as this of 1911, offers ample opportunity of "paying off political scores. " Iu dividual hatreds, personal grudg es, dislike of local party bossism, can be avenged, and not loosen party ties to any dangerous extent. Of course this does not apply to the independent vote. While Tues day's elections were local in their bearing, yet io advance there was a geueral expression throughout the country, in all political par ties, that the vote would be indi cative as showing the popular sen timent in their states, towards President Taft in Ohio, and Gov ernor Wood row Wilson, in New Jersey. But before the vote was fully known, the friends of Gov ernor Wilson had press dispatches sent broadcast, disclaiming that the New Jersey vote was any sin. The administration's friends may also say the same for Ohio, but politicians of both parties know, if they do not now declare it, that the presidential nomination possi bilities of both these gentleman have largely decreased. It does not mean their elimination as as sistants, but it places a political handicap upon them, and their friends and the people, generally know it As far as actual party gains, the So cialists were the largest, aDd except to those familiar with events, this party's capture of t he mayoralty in eight or ten Ohio towns, that of Schenectady, N. Y. a number of offices in Mississip pi, a'so leBser political positions in a number of other states, the Socialistic victories may appear startling. That Socialism is gaining, every election is proving in the returns. And the reason is not far to guess, when faithlessness to promises made the people if so often the rule of the political parties given office. Robert E. Davie, the young Boston broker, was sentenced to five years' Imprisonment for embezzlement. ""1 t'-" "- i tl SPAIN'S NATIONAL ANTHEM. La Marsha Reaile" Was Competed by Frederick the Qreat. Frederick tbe Great was the com-' poser of tbe Spanish uational anthem. Frederick's ambitions were varied.' He performed on tbe flute. Be desired to De thought a poet. He quoted Latin, but his quotations would have made Cicero stare end gasp. During that remarkable friendship which existed between him and Voltaire tbe author of tbe "Heurlade"' exclaimed with de cision, "Bee the ditty linen I have to wash," boldlug up Frederick's manu script which had been sent blm tu re vise. In the field tbe great warrior carried about his own poems lu his pocket and n bottle of poison, ho t hat be should not be taken alive. Mendel's picture depicts the king with his flute, and Bach dedicated to blm oue of Lis compositions. The story of the composition of the Spanish national anthem Is full ot in terest. A little while after the conclu sion of the Seven Years' war Frederick t a court reception to tbe surprise of every one produced a march which ho had composed. The Spanish ambassa dor, both a musician and courtier, asked for a copy to send to his royal master. Charles III. That monarch admired the piece, an 1 It was often beard at tbe Escurial. After a time It was laid aside and almost forgotten. In 1869, after the deposition of Isabel 's, Marshal Serrano Instituted a com petition among composers for a nation al anthem. Some 500 composition? were sent in, but none of them was so Inspiring as Frederick's march, which had been exhumed from the archives. This was chosen find Is today known aH"La Man ila Reaile."
