Clarences R. Edwards,. Chief of the
Bureau of Insular Affairs, in his annual
report repudmiee the recent reports
that Germany was running oft with the
bulk of the trade' with the Philippines
Islands. According to the report there
was imported" from the United States
in the last fiscal year merchandise to
the value of $19,483,658, a gain of $8,
703,357 over the pre v 14m year. While
trade with the United States grew at
this voiuma it increased with all other
countries combined only $4,067,736, Cot
ton and manufacturers constituted 20
per cent, of all the imports. One-half
of the imports from the United States
Were in the nature of cotton and manu
factures. Great Britaiji waa aecond
and more than $1,000,000 below the
United States- Despite free trade with
the United States the exports to this
country droppe) $2,024,615. The in-
atalla Ion of pobtal savings banks in the
Islands has Hrought forth considerable
gold and silver from Filippino ar cherts
according to the report. In the 414
banks in operation all over the Islands
deposits to the amount of 2.099.474 49
pesos were made. Of this amount. 80
per cent, was deposited by Filipinos.

tually become a heavy drain upon the

where tbey are unoccupied. Two hun

manufactured in Porto Rico during the
last year, according to the report. This
was 31,000,000 in excess of what were
manufactured last year. Porto Rico
has developed as a fruit, growing and
exporting country,, too, is the last
last year. The exports of fruit in the
last yeat were increased by one third,
the total ah p'ments reaching in value
$2,000,000. The exports of the island
amounted to $29,918,357 and the ira
ports mostly from the United States,
amounted to $38,686,997.
