BURN tew Bern, N. a Feb. 21, 1912. NO LONGER A POOR RELA TION. The whirlwind campaign inaug urated by the Circulating Librarj Committee, has resulted in $3,500, subscriptions being given in the first two days. It is a matter of public gratifi cation that this campaign was star ted. Its success could not be prob lematical, the only question was how quickly the committee could reach the people, one and all, for this community was bound to pledge itself to whatever amount was asked to place this library in its own home. For years it has been to the mor tification of the library committees that they had to follow the role of beggars to just sustain an institu tion that was as important to the community as any other, in for warding local welfare and progress. Too many persons failed to realize that a Circulating Library was a public institution, that contribu ted to the educational and thereby the moral uplift The present cam paign has dissipated that idea. It has brought the library home to every one approached,' and there by has developed the splendid spontaneous giving, for each sub scriber to the asked for 94,000 fund that will give the library its own permanent home, felt that this city needed the library, one that should be a credit, and be come each year larger, better and more helpful to the advancement of the better life of this communi ty. No longer as a public mendi Cf.ot will the Circulating Library be represented. No longer subject to be turned out of its rooms, to seek other quarters, that were grudgingly granted. Today the Circulating Library stands for it self, trberally, generously support ed, in full fellowship with this cit izenship. Children Cry FOR FLETCHER'S CASTOR! TUX ORSAT he knows that his story whenever told is a source of great ncouragement t the thousands of farmers who never had a better chance th in he hid him self. Palin was born and brought up on a farm near Newtown, Ind. He has never owned a foot of farm land in his life, and the 361) acre farm on which the champion ear of corn which won the Kellogg Trophy was grown is a rented farm. Mr. Palm's real experience as a farm er began about sixteen years ago. He had been on the road at a grocery ape-, ciilty salesman, when he took a notion tht he would rather be an agricultur ist, fo he took a few short courses at Punlue University and rented a portion of the farm he now occupies. Nine years ago he began carefully breeding this new variety of corn. For 2 years he planted two rows of ReM's Yellow Dent, then two of Alexander's Gold Standard, detasselir.g the Gold Stand ard. From the detasseled rjws he picked for seed only the ears carrying th characteristics he wanted to repro duce, planting these in breeding plo's and maintaining oreful selection, so that in nine years' time he had devel op ;d a well settled type. Th-- Paine champi n ear was (he first winner of the W. K. Kellogg National ln hy, a handsome bilver and enamel cup made by Tiffany of New York at a cost of $1,000. Mr, Kellogg as the orig ira'or and manufacturer of Toasted Corn Flakes naturally has a deep inter eat in the development of th hirh r grades of corn, for the c impany of wmcn n is presinen', the Ke I ptjx Toasted Corn Flake Co., r( quires ten thnuiand huHhels of corn a day for the making of its product. The fact that the KdloK iirodu :t is ma le from only fron sulec ted white corn, while the winning ear w.s of a pronuutue I yellow type, wan a peculiar feature.
