1HE MUNICIPAL
KKEP CLE IN HABIT.
Too many citizens took the cleao
up day declared for March lllh by
- the City Beautiful Department of
the Woman's Club, in the same
way that the boy accepts the soap
and water bath, for that particu
lar occasion only. This is to be
seen in the streets and ulles to
day, whioh have resumed their old
time untidy and unhealthy coudi
tions. The City Beautiful Department
had no doubt the idea for its clenu
up day for New Bern, that (he
sight of clean streets, alleys and
premises would prove an inspira
tion to the people, so that there
would be no relax movement, but
a continuation of clean up days.
One set day for municipal clean I i
cess will not fix the habit of mu
n lei pal cleanliness upon this city.
As for muuicipal cleanliness, it is
not a matter of just seodiog about
a few street sweepers, a few carte
to gather up the large heaps of
rubbish in the alleys, to take up
the trash from boxes on the streets.
The issue of being and keeping a
olean city rests upon each ami ev
ery citizen and property holder.
When every man, woman and
child safeguards every piece of pa
per, all kinds of trash and rub
bish, that these never appear
public places, there will be munic
ipal cleanliness, and (he city carts
- will serve to some good purpose, as
being the conveyors of trash and
rubbish that never has been
thrown upon the public sight,
therefore has not polluted the city,
destroyed its charm that comes
from real cleanliness.
When each and every person be
comes an active factor in keeping
back everything that may go out
to become a public nuisance, there
will be a city beautiful. Then will
. be learned that prevention is the
one 8 a re cure for an untidy city,
and the habit of clenlluess will
become chronic.
