About ten days ago every Industry

the Chamber of Commerce asking them
to let the Chamber of Commerce know
at once the volume of freight handled
by them in and out of New Bern during
the last twelve months Only, a few
have-complied with this request.
We are going to. make an eff rt to
get the Atlantic Coast Line give us a

that we have this information; before
our committee can go before the offici

I have also asked that the industries
of New Bern give me a statement of
the volume of freight that they handle
to and from Norfolk so that this infor

of New York City, who wants to estab

The committee will call for this in

In this immediate victolty there
some exeeptiaally fine crops. On
farm of -Mr. C. E. Fov near here un
der tbs skillful and efficient manage
ment of Mr J, J. PHtchett, there are
forty acres in corn that is the best forty
acres of corn I have aver, seen toe corn
stands 14 incbea by 72, with one and
two stalks to the hill with from X to 6
shoots or ears to the stalk. If every
thing eootiouea favorable the yield
easily be four hundred barrels or 2,000
bushels of corn. Mr. Pritchett has
also thirty acres in cotton - which is
good for from 1,600 to 2,000 lbs. of seed
cotton per acre.
Mr. J. A. Thomas on an adjoining
farm has corn as good as Mr. Foya but
only a few acres, on 18 by 84 inch row
and a fine crop of cotton also.
Mr. F. M. Taylor also, has fine 0rn
and cotton, on a small farm. .;-.
Mr. Jack Fearce has some very fiqe
corn 12 b 60 inch rows, fl la ex pect
ing 75 bushels per acre and a balet of
cotton per acre on most of Ms Arm
whjch hi large" one,
Mr. Newton A. White has two acres
in com. from which he expects 60 bush
els per acre, and I think he will get it
for his corn is as good as it can be on
upland. .
I could mention others but tnese are
in and around this place, Dr. Geo. R.
Hughes, Bill Foy, (colored) and Mr. J.
Bell all have fine crops The
cotton is in fine growing conditions
eepr and' bunchy- and shows thrift;
hope other sections are as much favor
ed as this in the crop outlook.
A few daya ago I drove up in the
Piney Grove aection, one of the most
progressive portions of Jones county,
where sueh model farmers live as Long
Ben Henderson, the boys of short Ben
Henderson, Fred Parker, George H.
Barrow the sons of John G. Parker, and
George H. Duvl. Tbey all have large
fields of fine cotton and corn and the
future looks bright and encouraging for
a .bountiful barveat.

Mr. J, J. Baxter went -to Morehead
City last night in response to a letter
bringing the news that his brother, Mr.
Thomas J. Baxter, was in the hospital
there very ill with hemorrhagic fever,
Mr. Baxter's severe attaek of fever is
attributed to the lack of drainage faci
lities for the water that has accumi-
lated behind the "made land" along the
water line at Morehead City, his room
being close by the locality where the

The vassal has been engsged in sound

Lookout Cove and will .continue this
work for some days yet, it is under

breakwater at Cape Lookout, which
will make a harbor of refuge at the
cape in which it ie said the whole navy
might ride in safely. An appropriation
for preliminary work on Ihta harbor has
passed the Senate acd will doubtless go
through the House at this session. Pro

In the game of base bill ball be

Poiloksville Sluggers played In this
city yesterday afternoon, the locals
were victorious by a score of 10 to 5
Both teams played well and won the
admiration of the""-spectators. But
it was Been from the first that the
visitors were out-classed In every way
and despite the fact that (hey
changed pitchers five times during
the game they were unable to put
them over the plate so that the loca
batters would fail to connect. Wal
ter Bray and Gulon Bartling com
prised the battery for the locals while
John . Chad wick, White, Gilllkln,
Oliver and Williams alternated in
pitching for the visitors.
