' Immediate 1 after, the last passenger had arrived the start was made. Heading slowly .toward the canal the vessel was within this waterway within a short while .after the start and the editors were looking with interest on the vast work that had been ac complished. Many of them were see ing the canal for the first time and from the start to the finish' of the trip it was a source of-wutb interest to them During the forenoonfiigbt refreshments were served to the guests -and at noon palatpblet-' luncheon- -consisting 'of roast beef, soft shell crabs,, etc., which bad been prepared at the Atlantic . in- Motel, was served, everyone was hungry and food had never tasted better than this. v No effort was made to rush toward New. Bern, their destination and the passengers bad ample opportunity to view their ''surroundings at leisure. During, the trip through - the canal? several -noted politicians made short talks onthe-politica! situation. Among the most- interesting- of these was discussion between Mr. E. M. With the- exception, of .. a . brass . banJ, which could not be secured," the scene at the station, when, the train bearing the boys pulled in was a repettioa of former similar occasion's. The platforms were lined with enthusiastic supporters of f.he various teams, who-were loudly Cheered, lhe Atlantic- company $ horse and wagon arrived on this ' train but tbe members of the. company deci ded to stay in Fayetteville for a few more hours'. - Despite the fact that the Button and kAtlantjc teams had extremely bad luck, having blown the nozzle off at the hy drant in the Interstate Race held on Thursday, the combined prizes won by the local companies amounted to $175. 00. The Buttons won the State Hose Wagon Race on Wednesday and on Thursday the Fourth Ward Company split second, third, and fourth money with two Raleigh Teams and- River side Company took the fifth prize. - The members of the Companies which have returned are profuse in their praise of the hospitality of the citizens of Fayettevijle. Everything possible was. done for the visitors and every company was given a square deal in every way. The track on which the races were held is said to be the slowest ever tclled by the firemen and although the gauge on the hydrant showed between 80 and 90 pounds it is not thought that there was really over 60 pounds pressure at any time. taking this in consideration there is little wonder tha,t .thererwere no spectac ular records made By the running teams. The members of! the Atlantic, hose wagon team returned home last evenj inn Irom fayetteville. Althougn tne boys had bad luck this time they were not downhearted in -the least. They realize that it., is impossible to win every; 'time and .this just- happened to- be the occagio n on which they lost out", "However, they intend to make some new world's records at the next) The; Morehead City team also returned - home- yesterday afternoon.
