' v AREUHITED FOR TARIFF BEVISIOri Democratic and ' Progressive Senators Decide- They WilL Get Together. TO PASS FOUR BILLS 11 lJ Chairman Underwood of House Ways and Means Committee In Alliance Washington, Ju'y 31. An uoder standing has been reached between the leadere of the Democratic and Prog' ressive forces In the Senate whereby they propose to take charge' of the body for the remainder of the session atil to put through a tariff revision program. Chairman Oscar Underocd, of the House Wayiaod Meant Qoodmlttee, it was stated has been taken, into the confidence of the coalition leaden. He will be a party to the combination and will aee to it that the program will .cot be interfered with in . the House. So far as can be eealhcred this pro gram includes the passage of compro' mis measures revi-ting the wosl. the cotton and the sugar schedu'es It also contemplates the enactment of the in come tax bill with all destructive amendments temoved. In general terms it means the passage of a series of progressive measures that will strong ly appeal to the country. If the alliance goes through, the ef fect will be a Democratic majority in both houses of Congress, and the result will be the passsge of a list of tariff reform bills that will give the Republi cans such a shock as they have not re ceived in a decade. Incidentally, it will seriously embarrass the President and put him in a deeper hole than when the extra session handed him three reform tariff bills a year ago. The levy for road and several other levies were made at the meeting in June. It is expected also that the board at its August meeting will take nnal ac-J ion on the Walker road matter. This is the road nhkh the Chamber Of Commerce liasaskel the county to put in such repair that it can bj used. It extends iu the direction of Aurora anl will shorten the route to that place by several milec, th route as traveled now being very circuitous. The members of the Chamber of Commers are awaiting with some anxi ety the action of the commiPBioners in this matter. They feel that for the county to fail to put the road io shape for service would rob, New B-rn of very inviting pro? pec t as the im provement of the read would bring to this city many people who now do their hopping elsewhere. As it runs through a very populous section, theraouit or new business for New Bern tba'. is in volved is corsiderable. The people along the road are clamoring for its improvement, and it Is felt that the Commissioners will be dispesed to put the county convicts on the road and got it in condition for use at an early date. The Chamber of Commerce hed the road carefully examined and it is be lieved that the cost of improving It will not exceed seve-al hundred dollars.
