Dr. Patterson on yesterday showed that dirty milk and the fly are at the bottom of typhoid fever epidemics. If a city would, be free from the typhoid fever scourge k must wage an untpiefiting wariare on, , the fly and unclean milk. We hope the "TJoard of Aldermen will maintain and mak constantly more effective ' its food inspection service and that house- holders, with the cc-operation of the citv health department, will keep on swatting the fly. LIKE CALIFORNIA ' Many folks will be fowvi who will ay that North Carolina is a pretty nice sort of State, but if tbey could their own State tJiey would choose California. Edwin Markharo said in a speech at Raleigh Wednesday ninht that North Carolina was more like California than any State he had visited. Save railroad fare . and re main in the California of the East. A REAL PROBLEM. There seems to be very decided need lor the activity of the North Carolina Fisheries Association which' has just closed a meeting at Washington. North Carolina is eleventh in the output of her fisheries as compared with the other States of the Atlantic -coast. Authorities say that the abundance-of her inland- waters and their peculiar adaptability to maintenance of coinmerical fisheries are ouch that she should be first. . The fisheries Association is address ing itself to this grave situation. It k an undertaking worthy of the best effort of the members of that body. North Carolina is not by any means making the most of her resources. - And right here is a good, place for us to say that it appears to us that Dr. Joseph Hyde, Pratt, the State Geo logist, is doing a great work for the State. His acquaintance . 'with the ' resources of the State is amazing in Its extent and his views as to how these resources Can be conserved and de veloped seem to be thoroughly practical, based as they appear to be both on fine theoretical equipment and - on , well j utilized opportunities for observation. Dr. Pratt has an inspiring work and he is pursuing it with a zest which shows that he enjoys it. There have been a lot of predictions as to what the parcels post would do to t he country. We shall know . pretty soon just how ,much of truth there was in those alarums. Mayor Fitzgerald of Boston said in : an address in Washington Wednesday that Boston had paid seventy million1 - dollars in transportation charges on 'thirty million- "dollars worth of coal. ' Yet the railroads say they are the most oppressed of all institutions. - , t i With the opening of the Hote James, New Bern is provided with three first JV j-class hotels. They ..will "help the town . . ' . grow. No , better advertisement for a .'town than good hotel facilities. ' ,. ,i; Sorne ofthe papers have been railing ; .it the S,A. L, Medical Association. We rise to remark that this is a miotake. , f It is ''Seaboard meaning the terfi r tory along the coast. jZ o ,. i-si ,'.'- r-i--,. -t 1 ' MONEY TALKS v v .- Miss Mamie Bays '.whose reports of . ' , , . The' greatest; danger xonfronting the Church of Christ in America today - is t'.ie possible decadence of the' pulpit. Let the pulpit decay and the cause of Christ is lost. Nothing can take the i place of preaching. ; There is no power under heaven equal to a God-inspired pulp t. Anthems and hymns, respon sTve readings and creed recitation-), all have tlicir place and when rightly ucd are a means of grace; but all of them put together cannot take the place of NEW C3N, N. C. Anj ignorant pulpit is the worst of all scourges, An ineffective pulpit - is a. the most lamentable of all scandals. The cause of. Christ, is hopelessly handicapped and blocked when Christian preachers . .1. 1 ' . A lorget now to preacn. we must guara the pulpit with all diligence, for out of it are the issues of life. Any sign of decay in it must fill all well-wishers of the church with regret and. alarm. ., There is a good deal of surmising nowadays as to why so few people go to church. Perhaps the answer is that so few find that they can be entertained there. , It is exceedingly hard to en tertain folks now. There are so many forms of diversion that it takes a live man to compete with them. So a denomination which hopes to reach the people will have to do as this com mittee report urges, namely, stress the necessity of the best of training for the ministry. After all it is a matter of dollars and cents. More money must be speut.' That means more sacrifice on the part of individual 'church mem bers. In the religious world as in the world in general, much depends on the rank and file. But how important the ministry is, is shown from the fact Sat :n it In large measure the question of whether" or not' the rank and file do their duty. ' ""The ministry is at the beginning of religion, humanly speaking.' - SMALL BUSINESS. . " . (New York. World) Theoretically, it is for the good of the service that Mr. Taft has removed a few Federal office-holders of the Bull Moose faith for pernicious political activity. .Practically it is:, not only stupid but very petty "business fof the President to engage in. ,i. Mr. Taft incurred general condem nation when as a means of punish ment he withheld . all patronage' from Republican insurgents in the Senate and later attempted to buy back their support by the offer of spoils. He will not fare differently now that he isa defeated candidate for the Presidentcy There are three big problems In advertising: ,.,,'., ' " To hit the right people ' " At the right time " In the right way.. .. The New ' Bern Journal solves two of .them." . , , , ' , : It reaches the buying class lu the morning hours-tb.e hours when most . people , make ; their plans for the day's shopping. tt only remains for the merchant tojpresent ' his advertisements In attractive form,' and the trade of the best people In New Bern is at his command. : ' , $100 REWARD, $100.' -' The readers of "this paper will be pleased to learn that there is at least one dreaded disease that science' has been able to cure in all its stages, and that is Catarrh, Hall's Catarrh Cure is the only positive cure now known to the medical fraternity.-- Catarrh being, a constitutional disease, requires a con stitutional treatment.
