ft !mTl J the journal; NEW IfKRN, N. CI, JUNE 9, 1882. Importance of a Letter. 0 Curious blunders' liave been made by telegraph operators in changing words pf messages sent. But it would be hard to find a case parallel to the following, related in &cribne'yB, where the change of a single letter turned a living intoa dead man., ,'ilr. , Raymond, editor of New York Timet, often visited the army during the Rebellion, and was intimate with. many, offlcere. , He received one day a telegram from Col. Swain, which startle him: Your brother's corpse is at Belle Plaine. Come Immediately.' He started early the next morning for Washington, and missing Col. Swain there, pushed forward to Belle Plaine full of sad thoughts that his brotherj who had been very sick; had died so Buddon. On the way he met Dr. Dean, of Albany who was engaged in embal ming the dead bodies of soldiers, and ' made arrangements to have his brother embalmed. . 'Going to Gen Washington's head quarters, to whose division his brother's! t J"''gflQe wa9 attached, the general kindly ; sent ono oi nis onicers to inquire into ) the circumstance of his brother's death. " The officer soon returned, and the brother xvith him. The telegraph had blundered by adding a letter. Colonel Swain had written, 'Your brothers's corp is at Belle Plaine.' The tele- , crapher made it corpse. The blunderer was pardoned; however, by both brother,? on account ot tne joo oi meeting. Sudden Deaths. tics. -Anscsthct- f 4The public are tfamiliar. with deaths in the dentist's chair . from chloroform, and, less often, from ether. It is not ' vrell to use either in slight surgical cas ses, especially as nitrous oxide is always sate. ., v.. ...r . . Bull, in surgical operations, as a whole, even chlorotorm has saved vastly .-, more than it has killed, it both' enables tho operator to handle the case more carefully, and prevents that nervous expenditure on the part of the patient which, of itself, often determines a fatal , ' issue" . Chlorpform produces its amesthetic effect $ j its Action on the brain and ner vous centres. Now there is a great difference in brains in their, jsuacepti- ' bility to influence, whether narcotic or stimulative, j A quantity, of, liquor ''. which will throw" one into a drunken stupor, and inflame another with . man iacal rage, will, at the most, only gently stimulate a, third k ' The diffeaence is partly tonstitntion al, and partly dependent on .acquired perience, doubtless, will enable us to rknow whether ihe admiration of a " powertul anaesthetic will be sate in ri'lo .J onlv rifirtial. It ia. however, known I . that it Is hot safe forjersohs troubled . . with heart conplaints; nor for those ad- dicticd to the use of ardent spirits; nor for any soon after a full meal. v But' these cases aside , the question is one mainly of quantity. And it is probable that by-and-by it will ' be 4'ound that the true and safe course will be in all cases, to use only so much, or so taiich pombined with other drugs, , asjwell leave the intellect,! free, while v rendering the pain bearable. The immediate cause pf death from chloroform is a temorary paralysis of the nerves either ot tho lungs or the the heart, ; through such change in the blood as to take away its power ",V supply nervous: stimulus. Spasmodic Action. - The muscles are endowed with con tractile power. They tend of them selves to draw their extremites. toward 'their" centre.' The heart is.a double hollow muscle, whose alternate con traction and dialation constitutes its 'beatina.' s The.i .contraction"' throws on the blood into the system, and the dilation bperis the heart for more. The working of this central engine is so es . sential that its power to dilate and con tract is, to some extent, provided for within itself, oo much so is this case that the heart will beat for a ' considcr- ablv' time after it has been removed from a vigorous animal. Certain ganglia ', it the base of the ' brain supply the force necssary to motion tho motor , neve-force, as it is called. The supply is generated by the nerve cells in the motor centres, direct lv from arterial blood. 1 H Witholof the? blood 'from the motor cells and all!motion at once ceases. The same effect follows whenfihe '.blood is sufficiently vitiated through the failure f: i! i x ' i: i-:i of lungs, liver or kidneys to elimate its Constantly accumulating impurities. The motor nerve-force acts by ex- tending the muscles, or when they, aw W a slate 'of hpjSarent restby "simply counteracting tne contracuie lenueucy. In the case of the heart, thb motor and the contractile force act alternately. XI.
