New Berne, N. C, Jan. 12th, 1883. Editor JOURNAL: You, make some inquiries in the Daily Journal of Jan. 5th, about the Amber Sugar Cane. : I have had some ten years'experieuce in this crop, in' Pasquotank county. Prepare the land just as ff you would plant it in corn and cultivate it the same; it don't require any more work than corn. ' ' Plant in light sandy or clay soil -i-black soil will make a dark syrup if the laud is poor, manure well in the drill; plant the last of April or the first of May;, plant; in the drill,, twenty In ches apart, cover one inch deep; leave from four to five stalks in the hill- , Good cane made up before it gets too ripe will yield from 100 to 125 gallons per acre, and will make from 30 to 40 bushels; of seed: per, acre, which is as good 'as corn for hogs. The' fodder is not ns 'good as corn fodder, but iriakes good feed for stock. Ihe seed and fodder will pay for the cultivation of the crop. It will cost from ten to fifteen rents per gallon to make it up. " 1 ( ' For family use, and - to sell to the hands employed on the farm, it is worth from 40 to 50 cents per gallon. When sold to merchants it brought 33 i cents per gallon. If two or three farmers would join together and buy a cane mill and evap orator, and eacli one plant a few acres in cane, and get their neighbors to plant a small pateh, it would not cost much and would pay them to do so. A one-horse 'mill arid evaporator capacity for making 50 gallons per day, would cost from $80 to $100. Two-horse mill, making 75 gallons per day, would costfrom$125to$150. .... ' The interest .'of the State is problematic. The creditor or bondholders eaiiuot be preju diced., The wmpany undertakine the construction cannot be deceived. Tho stock; without anv "encum- brain o, ou it is worth (something, but .Heavily encumbered as t he State's stock is, it is not valuable. The State owns . 12,Gb'G shares. Some of these Iwnds urtj doubtless lost, some may be re tired under the' funding act; but we have to assume that all may be withheld, ' constituting a lien of 4o0,000 ou . this stock. The road can be leased certainly for $40,000, auu piobably,ur !j45,ooo and taxes, tor n term of twenty years i The interest on the companv' debt is about $18,000. , There would be about $20,000 applicable' to divi dends, ol w hich two-thirds ' would bo coming to the owner, of- the State's stock. If some arraiie'e- meiit could be made with the bond holders to scale their debt and issue a four per cent, bond, perhaps ti lease for thirty years at $45,000 a year would, result in saving the State s .interest' without the pay menfc of anything additional there for. The road will be valuable in time. On the other 'Hand a road built from Smithfleld to Salisbury would open a. line country, enhance the value of property in the coun ties traversed, and be a blessing to that section of the State Wo are not informed whether any company would lie williug to make the en. gagement. , . i .
