We think they are at least ten inohes high; and in pass - ing judgment we remembered "De Granville." . . Mayor Howard was out yesterday for the first time since returning from Ral . eigh. He says young Burkhead, the reading clerk, was the smartest young man he saw there, and thinks Stanford of Duplin, understands the maneuver ing better, and thinks he is decidedly the most handsome man in the Legisla ture. ..c-;". . The steamer Kinston brought down yesterday morning a corn mill, shipped by J. W. Grainger from Kinston to R. M. Garris at Bell's Ferry. It is made of Moore county grit, but we notice the office of the company that manufacture them is in Maryland. Mr.iE. G. Cuth bert manufactured one Here in New Berne a short time ago for Mr. Hezekiah Davis, out of the same kind of grit, and -we think would compare favorably with any manufactured out of the State Delinquent. . ,k , V- Collector Hancock advertises on our fourth page the delinquent tax list for this year. He says it is the smallest he has had for a number of yearn, but .it strikes us a good long one yet. , ; Presbyterian Church. The pulpit of this church will be filled tomorrow (Sabbath) by Rev. R, Feagles, of New York city. Mr.Feagles formerly lived in New Berne, and is well known to many of our citizens. On a portion of the line between here and Goldsboro is an up grade, one and a half miles long, with a rise of forty feet to the mile, and a six degree curve to pass, y et, we are told by the en gineer, that he made it without a baulk. This is the eigine that was reported by Gen. Lewis to be a "total wreck. " The master machinist, Mr. Manly, says the engines on the Midland Road are in better condition now than they have been for a long time. , La Orange Items. Free Btver Steamers. Our busi ness men are anxious to know what will be done with Schedule "B." .There is certainly no sense nor justice in taxing an article two or three times, as is done by the operation of the present revenue law; besides, its tendency is to break down the wholesale trade of our home merchants. . .w '!-'--. viv '-' . Capt. Daniels of the Kinston Press was in town Tuesday. W. W. Dunn, C, S. C, was in town on Thursday, on official business. Sheriff . Davis . and "Bill" Phillipps were here one day this week, the Sheriff on official business, I suppose. McPate lost his buggy factory tit Snow Hill, by fire Tuesday night. The cir cumstances were such as to leave but little doubt that it was the work of an incendiary. The Methodist revival in this place is still progressing. Mr. and Mrs. Car penter are conducting the meetings, and doing effective work. The congrega tion increase in numbers and interest, and the "mourners bench" is literally thronged each night. Four conversions up to this writing. There was some complaint on account of the disappointment of Tuesday night Professor Reade failed to come. It to be hoped that in the future an under standing will be had, and if there is to be no entertainment, let the people know it. On Thursday evening last, about one o'clock, the alarm of fire was given, and it was soon discovered to be in the di rection of Snnkey Hollow. ... A house in the suburbs of that detestable locality had taken fire in! the rear part of the building. 'A large crowd soon gathered, and by' the active UBe of buckets and water, the adjoining buildings were protected till the engine arrived, and thereafter there was no danger of a spread of vtthe. flames-The .property buriied was1 a ' thre room one-story building and belonged to Mr. F. Goldsboro Messenger, ' i 4 yOung lad named 1 William Cotton, about 14 years old, living with Mr. Har ris Crawford, in this city, met his death in a most shocking manner on Tuesday last, in being thrown from a horse and kicked and dragged for about one nun dred and fifty yards, while his foot was entangled in the stirrup straps. His skull was fractured and his body other wise so badly bruised that he died very soon after being released from the horse. Our county Coroner, Dr. Tom. Mr. Loftin explained that the $500 appropriated by the last ses sion for the monument the people of Kinston were satisfied was not enough for a monument to so great a ' man, and so with a "Caswell fund" they raised among them selves over six hundred more dol lars. ,It was a great State's day, the unveiling of the monument; Vanco made a speech, etc.; he with others loaned the association $175, rather than see ' the occasion fail. lie had presented this claim before the committee and they had refused to honor it; h&wanted this $175 re turned and $325 more,1 so as for the whole to go to putting an iron fence around the monument. '-..' Mr, Boykin supported the bill and hoped it would pass. V Mr. Webb, as chairman of the finance' committee, thought the five hundred dollars given by the State was enough.
