La Grange Items ' At what age do boys commence smoking cigarettes x v . Cotton chopping time is at hand Probably it will make trade brisk and cash more plentiful. , , There is a better run of the "yaller belly" perch this season than has been for many years. Fishing squads are at it almost constantly, with rod and line, while untold numbers are being taken from the traps. The much talked of Uzzell and Sea well suit,, or suits, were compromised at Wayne county court last week. This is better, and it is to be hoped that kindlier feelings will exist in the sec tion of White Hall, hereafter. - The assessment of real property for this, Mosely Hall township, will com mence to-morrow. I understand the object is not to increase tho taxes, but to assess real estate "at its true market value." This can work no harm, pro vided the assessments are uniform throughout the county and State. " But if one township in a county should as sess at the true value, and others at less, then it would be a hardship on the one assessing as the law requires. There fore, it is right and proper, and should be observed by the assessors of this county, at least, to assess as was agreed at the meeting vat its true value. Uzzell, Mayer 'elect of Kinston, and the new - board of town commissioners, were sworn into office last Monday by Justice Wm. C. Fields. The Mayor, promises to see that all the "diapers" are kept dry during his ad' ministration. , ' ' Eighteen penitentiary convicts passed through Kinston last Saturday on their way to Quaker Bridge Road in ' Jones county. The novelty of their dress at tracted as much attention as & circus peagant, while many a sinner resolved in his heart never to be caught in such company. "There, was no physioian there," and sent as theso convicts are at this season, to a malarial section, our overcautious penitentiary board ought, at least, to have taken along a gross of Weyher's Chill pills to save life. Judging from the way he put it to the Sunday School picnic to Smithfield last Friday, Superintendent , Bryan of. the Midland Road is superior to the , Rail Road experts in high charges. The agent at ftis place attached two open cars to the picnic train for twenty dol lars, but the superintendent required him to collect forty dollars or. pay it himself. However, the superintendent may contemplate nicel-plating his toad out of the profits arising from Sunday school excursions and we will not com plain as his action comes under the great laws governing the correlation and conservation of purses. .
