which brought' Gov. ' Jarvis forward
with a two hours' speech. He discussed
the proposition offered by the Eastern
N. C. liailroad Company and desired to
make a proposition to them. Said he
My proposition is this: If the E. N. C,
R. R. Co. will amend their proposition
in this particular, that they will pay
$30,000 a year rental for the A. & M, J,
R. R. (for it takea about that sum to
pay the interest, keep up the organiza
tion of the present company, and to pay
taxes), and alter paying all expenses
of operating the road, then pay them
selves 8 per cent interest on the money
they put into it, and the balance of tho
surplus they will distribute among tho
private stockholders of the A, & N. O.
