We have been having a little of the . ,, .c. t. j. northern weather for the Ust few days, it is severely cold. Rubber Bhnes and over coats are in demand. Mr. D. C. Parker's tar room has been closed for the last three or four days. I have been informed that Mr. Parker intends to change his business. jCapt. Mclver was in Trenton to-day (Monday) and I was informed by Capt. Everybody were talking about their rice crop two years ago. I never hear anything about it now. -. Cotton has about played out. It is a rare thing to see a bale passing around now. Corn is taking its place now and it is selling at 60 cents per bushel. Eggs are plentiful at 15 cents per dozen. Chickens are scarce; none in market. I heard a prominent citizen of : our county say that he sent an order to Trenton for two gallons of whiBkey on Saturday, the 6th inst., and that it had frozen so hard ne nad been unable to get his morning dram. I don't wonder at the water being so low in the Trent river. ;. - .':...: Bovs." exclaimed unele'Noah. as he was warming kMrteet around cnarae i)oyJTOV on Saturday, "you needn't to be afraid to mortgage this year." Whiskey was plenty in Trenton on the 7th inst. I don't know whether it was New Berne whiskey or Trenton whiskey that had such an effect. Law yers, bridge men and machinists were well into it. some were in a fighting mood, but late in the evening they took their departure for their homes, after having some severe words skirmishing with the county commissioners and others. , ' Fatal Accident. Mr. William J. Gordon, a well-known insurance agent at Wilmington, met with a sudden and untimely death yes terday, while gunning at his farm in the eastern limits of the city. - - Xhe particulars of the sad affair, as far as they could be gathered, are as follows: Mr. Gordon procured a double-barrel breech-loading shot gun from Mr. Geo. A. Peck's hardware store, about eight o'clock in the morning, and between nine and ten o'clock left his house for a few hours' sport in the fields surround ing his home. A colored man employed on the farm heard and saw him shoot at a bird in the field near the dwelling, and watched mm afterwards as he crossed towards a line fence, separating the in cisure. Shortly afterwards the colored man heard a second shot, but did not again see Mr. Gordon. About half -past 4 in the afternoon, however.
