News comes from Cincinnati of a terrible riot, caused by the verdict of a jury in the trial of William Berner for the murder of William II. Kirk. ! Kirk was killed iu a . stable by a blow ' from a hammer, robbed of about $1C0 in money and his body put into a wagon, hauled off and dumped into a mill stream, where it was found two days later. Joe Palmer and Win. Berner con fessed that they did the murder for robbery. On the trial of Berner he testified that Palmer did the actual murder while helooked on, and got a share of the money. , Upon this testimony the jury, brought in; ' a verdict of manslaughter, and as they left tho court room were hooted at by : the crowd with suggestions that they should bo hanged. We copy from the Star telegrams in. re gard to what followed: : ; Cincinnati, March 29. Ten : thousand persons gathered at Music Hall, last night, to take action on the Berner verdict. StrQngresolu tions wpm'pted condemning i,h 5fdTct,' and a committee on legis lation was appointed. . Upon ad Joanrmnt the large crowd moved directlyo the jail, and began an attackrjn the front door. The r:ot alarm was sounded, summoning the entiro police force to the jail. When the police arrived the mob refused to move. The police fired in, the air without dispersing the mob. At 11:30 the First Ohio ltegiment IN a tional Guards entered the jail The military flred to scare the !mobj four or five shots. ' Berner,' when sentenced, was disguised and taken in a buggy , to Linwood, where he boarded the tram tor iioveiand. When the train reached Loveland the crowd made for Berner? who ran through the car and escaped. ' 1:30 a. . M. The fire ; engines re sponded to an alarm, but t after much difficulty : in getting near found the alarm was false. It was occasioned by a bonfire1 built near the jail. As the building is mainly of stone and iron it would be dim cult to fire it from without. It now appears that there was an actual conflict between the mob and the military, which were early called out, though it is sua most likely that the wounds of the police and the military were inflicted by the fire of the latter. When the inner door between the. reception room and the cell rooms were broken down, the military . fired into the . mob, and Lew Kent, a laborer, one of the moo, was snot ana Kineq. This seemed to break the spirit 6f , the mob though they did not retire - hastily. A number of brickbats were thrown by them at the soldiers and police, but generally there was not much bitterness of feeling dis played on either side. The greatly superior ' strength ot the . de fenders ot the iau over an un armed and impromptu mob, was so - manifest when, the lormer opened fire, that it . would have been utter folly to make any ' further effort. Some , twenty-five or thirty men were arrested and ' are in jail. - :,' . - 'r':;--''' The jailor's residence in the jail which was entered by a portion oi the mob, was rudely handled, the windows broken and the furniture smashed. . From this a number of men made their way into the kitch en, and thence to the lower corridor. Alter the relinquishment of the main effort to get at the prisoners, . the mpb lingered outside, throwing stones and r brickbats at the win dows. ' ' ' ' 4 1.45 a. m. The firing was terribly de structive.
