That farmer assures us nothing of the kind was done and that our informant is a li-li-locofoco. There was a grand scramble in the Republican convention last Saturday for the place of delegate to the Halifax convention. Every county delegate was a candidate, each voting for him self, and all being determined on going either to h 1 or Halifax. Two of them went one a Methodist, the other a free thinker, and both are happy. The Whale, of the News and Obser ver, and the eloquent Indian medicine man of the "Tar heel Monthly," were cutting at each other during our court week as to their relative size. The Republican convention at Kin, ston last Saturday sent Richard L. Parrott and J. W. Collins professed O'Hara delegates to the Congressional Convention at Halifax, N. Loftin, Esq., of Wayne county, as the Republican candidate for attorney general of JNorth Carolina, i La Grange Items. Lovely weather. i J. C. Carter, of our town, has a child dangerously sick with measles. . The road or roads leading to and from the new bridge, are now open to trav ellers. Moses Joyner, Esq., residing about a mile from town, is quite sick with billious fever. D. W. Wood, Esq., is ahead in catfish stories up to now. One caught the other day was longer than his buggy was wide. Rev. J. D. Cavanaugh filled his monthly appointment at Hickory Groye last Saturday and Sunday. Measles continue to rage in our place. A number of the students are absent from school on account of the disease. Rev. J. D. Carpenter will, by the unanimouB consent of tho trustees, preach at Hickory Grove on the 3rd Sunday in each month at 3:30 p. m. A. T. Kennedy, of tho firm of Stanly & Kennedy, proprietors of the celebrated Cox cotton planter, was in town Satur day. R. B. Kinsey is agent for the sale or this planter in our place. Rev. A. Golden Smith purchased eggs' worth of corn one day last week. His "Riverence" will feed the corn to the hens who will lay more eggs. What the profit will bo the preacher mu9t tell. Rev. Mr. Hires preached hero Thurs day and Friday nights. Also Sunday and Sunday night. His sermons were able, instructive and highly appreciated He left here this morning for Baltimore to attend the Southern Baptist Conven tion. It is reported that Rich. Davis, a col ored man on Ben Sutton's place, shot his mother-in-law in Duplin last week It was at first reported that serious not fatal wounds were inflicted. But last accounts say but little damage was done. Nathan Washington, colored, was ar rested here Saturday for being found in Jesao Brown's smoke house and at tempting to steal meat. Miss Mollie Biown, on going to the smoke house found the door partly opened and the negro in the act of taking out three hams. The negro ordered her not come there, but by the assistance of the dog the meat was dropped and the negro pursued Miss Brown towards the house which she entered and closed doors, Washington was required to give bond tor his appearance at court, which he failed to do and was committed.
