This is riot exactly what we said, and that the public may know the exact language, we reproduce the article 'The Sheriff has hung up a bundle of papers at the court house door containing the names of persons whose N property is advertised for taxes. Every year this same farce of Rollins lands for taxes is gone through with, many of thfi owners cf the land paying no attention to it. We believe one cause- of this carelessness on the part of the land owner in allowing his lands to be sold for taxes is because the Sheriff's daed nnder such sales are not con si Jered goed. ; But if the Sheriffs would comply strictly with the law, delinquents would not allow their l ands to be sold for taxes, especially vkere the land is of anvvalne. The law, should bo so unequivocally framed that every person who owns property should understand that it he fails to con tribute to the funds which are to be expended for the - protection of that property, in the same propor tion that his fellow men contributes, he forfeits his right to the same. " ;,We do. not wish to be understood as favoring oppressive measures for tho collection of taxes, j We believe the burden falls heaviest on those of moderate means, those who own a little property; but we do advo cate a systein of collection that will hare tho burdens of taxation fall equally on all in a just proportion as to the amount o.f property they may possess. ::-'"iv; The commissioners report deals only with the matter of collection of taxes, but there is still another matter worthy of consideration, and that is the listing of taxes. It is said that there is a looseness in the isting that amounts to almost as great loss to the revenue as the delinquent: payers. This is easily remedied; let each list taker be well posted in the law, and the articles to be listed and, aid the lister in making up a full and accu rate list, and omissions that are many times unintentional will be avoided." : ,. : v The Goldsboro Messenger learns that the air is thick with rumors of change in : the Kepnblican pro gramme in this State and, that the nomination of Yoke J has aroused nothing approaching enthusiasm in any quarter. It is hardly probable that the Eepublicans will do such a silly thing.
