I. - Macks and Nathaniel Jacobi, of Wil- - mington, Mr. Henry Morris, of Tarboro, who were in attendance upon the Grand Council of the Legion of Honor, and , also had the pleasure of meeting several of Stanly street with lumber, and ask ing the Board to take some action caus ing the obstructions to be removed. Referred to Committee on Wharves and Docks. Councilman S. H. Gray reported for the committee on purchasing a fire en gine for the New Berne Steam Fire En gine Co., that the committee had pur chased from the Button Steam Fire En gine Co. one of their engines on the fol lowing terms: The engine to cost $'3600, payable as follows: $1100 for the old engine and the balance in $500 notes, to before the Board assembled, in conver sation with one of the Board, Mr. T. H. Mallison, he told me that Mr, Carraway had underbid me, that his bid was $140, and that they were disposed to give the contract to Mr. Carraway and myself. I immediately asked Mr. Blackledge, the Clerk of the Board, to give me my proposal, which he did, and I changed it from $150 to $139, in order that I might be the lowest bidder. I will say hcan ticket, and all my exertions would be for this grand cause of Prohibition. Neither party dared to take up this great issue for fear of losing the whisky vote.
