The convention was called to order by J. W. Grainger, chairman of .the Executive Committee, at 11 o'clock a. m. J. C. Wooten, sr., moved that a com mittee of three be appointed on creden tials. The motion was adopted and the chair appointed the following: J. C. Wooten, sr., S. H. Rountree and William Taylor. . While the committee retired to exam- credentials, J. Y. Joyner, Esq., a promising young man of La Grange, was called for. He responded in a short, eloquent and beautiful speech, causing one old gentleman to remark: Joyner is a little man but he can make big speech." He came forward and entertained the con vention with words of encouragement, and congratulated the delegates on the striking contrast in the order they pre served and that Of the body which as sembled there on the Saturday before Mr. Kouse is a good speaker, ana we believe there is a conservative element in his ideas about public affairs, which will enable him to do effectual work in the campaign. The committee on resolutions re turned and reported through their chairman, J. Q. Jackson, Esq., the fol lowing: - - Whereas, the interest of our citizens are quite diversified in regard to the stock law in Lenoir county; and where as, it is purely "a local question and of no special interest to the great body of our Legislature, further than a desire to act in the matter, for the best interest of those immediately concerned, and whereas we have full confidence in our Senators and Representatives that they will act n these local matters according to the interest and wishes of those 1m E. Mr. Rountree '8 name was withdrawn. The second ballot resulted, Hodges 26, Mewborne 24. Geo. L. Hodges was declared the nominee for Register of Deeds, and on motion his nomination was made unani mous. ' Dr. J. M. Kirkpatrick was unanimous ly nominated by acclamation for the office of Coroner. E. P. Loft in was unanimously nomi nated for county surveyor. vol. a. is. Whitfield. Messrs. John X. Gray and John F. Mewborne were put in nomination for treasurer. First ballot, Whitfield 18, Gray 22 and Mewborne 10. Second ballot, the name of John F. Mewborne was withdrawn. Whitfield 25, Gray 25. J. J. wooten, sr., suggested that it was the duty of the chairman to give the casting vote; The chairman regreted that circum stances made it his duty to say who should be the candidate, but if it was his duty he would not shrink from it, but would cast the vote for Col. N. B. Whitfield. J. Q. Jackson, Esq., raised the point 01 order that the chair had no right to give the casting vote but should order another ballet. By general consent the point was discussed by Messrs. Wooten and Jackson, and the chair decided the point well taken and ordered another ballot, which resulted, Gray 29, Whit- tieiaai. John T. Gray waa declared the nomi nee for treasurer, and, on motion, his nomination was made unanimous. The names of J. Q. Jackson, D. G Taylor and S. I. Wooten were put in nomination for the House of Kepre sentatives. S. I. Wooten 's name was withdrawn by his request. Mr. Jackson stated that he could not accept the nomination and requested that his name be withdrawn. The con vention refused to allow him to with draw. . l. wooten 's name was again brought forward. A ballot was ordered which resulted 13 for Taylor, 18 for Wooten and 24 for Jackson. Second ballot, Taylor 14, Jackson 27. Mr. Jackson was loudlv called for. He ascended the stand and made a very earnest, patriotic speech, deolairing his full faith in the success of the National, State and County Democratic tickets, and for the reason of this faith he most I Tuesday. The name of J. W. Uralnger, which was brought forward at first but with' drawn at his request, was again brought lor ward. S. I. Wooten was again withdrawn, The third ballot waa ordered which resulted, Taylor 14, Grainger 36. J. W. Grainger was declared Improvement. ' The frame of the Baptist parsonage is up and begins to show what it will took like when thoroughly enclosed. It will fill a space long in need of a build ing to relieve the unfinished appearance which it has presented for over half a century, , Oneef the Windley stores on Middle street is undergoing a thorough renova tion and receiving a coat of paint, prep aratory to the occupancy of Mr. Sam. B. Waters. The buildings of Capt. Richardson, on South- Front street havo the roefu on and pearly ready for the ten ants. , Mr. Wm; Dunn has his wind pump now in working order and will supply his dwelling with water in every room. A comfort much needed in this commu nity. "Water is cheap" but not con venient in many cases. T. E. Mace, Esq., has added an L to his d welling on Johnson street and says he can now entertain his friends with more "hostility." Mr. Wm. Colligan, jr., is adding to his buildings on Hancock street near the depot and improved the appearance of them greatly. The building of Mrs. Cohen on Pollock near Hancock street is in fair progress and will soon be completed. Mr. Asa L. tfynum has added to his dwelling and store at his new location on Queen ot. and is a decided improve ment in the appearance of that locality, The public school building is approach ing completion and an effort will be made to have it ready for use during the early days 01 the next session. QThe Methodist Church is undergoing great improvement and alteration, but the work has not progressed far enough yet to show as it wm further on. The spirit of improvement is prevalent and the mechanics of the city were never more generally employed.
