By reference to the Journal files we find that the steamer left on Saturday morning, Sept. 8th, became diesbled that evening near Brant l6lund, anchored and despatched a boat, obtained from the lighthouse, with engineer Hand and others for New Berne for aid. En gineer Hand arrived at New Berne Sunday morning. The cutter Stevens left for the disa bled steamer, but on reaching Broad creek made a harbor and was unable to proceed on Monday. . A party went up yesterday to Core creek to organize a Scales and Cleveland Club. If it rained there as it did here, we think that the Club will wash well and not be likely to get out of soap. COMMERCIAL. Newbkrn, N. C, Sept 12, 1884 The Exposition Committee of Craven county are endeavoring to make an ex hibit of the resources of Craven county at tne North Carolina State Exposition, to be held in Raleigh during the month of October, and they issue this appeal to the citizens of Newbern for funds to en able them to carry ont the plan Through the energy and work of a few members of the committee, a large space in the best portion of the building has been obtained, and much work has been done towards preparing the ex-J deaths, hibit, wnicn can be made or great ad' vantage to the county. This is an excellent opportunity to make a display of our timber, marl, fish, and agricultural interests, but it work. off from communication with each other, except by way of the Omaha rail way Iron briuge, which admitB of the passage of foot passengers. It is situ ated so far up the river that a walk of four miles is necessary in reaching the business portion of tba east tide from the court house. Almost every family in the city loses something. The Chi cago, Milwaukee K St. Paul railway oompany's loss in the Chippewa valley is not less man nair a million dollars. The lumber companies all lose heavily, but the heaviest losses are suf fered by the poor people, who have had their houses swept away The newspaper offices have all been flooded, and no paper was issued yes terday or will be to-day except the Leader, which is such a small sheet that it is printed on a job press. Only one life was lost in the flood here. A man named Ehler was drowned while trying to rescue his sick wife. Mayor Davis bas telegraphed to Wabasha for a steam terry boat, wnich will come up the river as soon as the stage of the water will permit. Work will be commenced upon the bridges to replace those swept away as soon as the water goes down. Naples, Sept. ll.The situation here continues of the most distressing char acter. The dreadful epidemio increases hourly in its ravages. A feeline of the deepest gloom pervades the city and the misery and suffering among the poor are simply appalling. King Humbert was yesterday prevented from visiting the poorer quarters of the city. riAPLEs, sept. 11.
