F. M. Simmons, Esq., made a rousing
speech at Beaufort on Wednesday night.
Col. Jke Young made a speech at the
- same time but not to the same crowd.
Mr. Simmons asked for a joint discus
sion and division of time, but the Colo
nel would not consent to a fair division.
; So Simmons took the crowd and his
own time while Col. Young enjoyed his
own without much crowd.

men have passed away. '
At the court house there was another
gathering addressed by Col. Ike Young,
W. S. 'O'B. Robinson, Daniel Stimson
and others. We could not be at both
speakings, for when Burkhead turned
loose in the Club room wo had no dispo
sition to divide time.1 We
would have been pleased,
however to have beard all these gen-
tiemen, as we nave no doubt they pre
sented their side of the question
strong as could be
The Democratic gathering was quite
as large as that of the Republicans,
which speaks well for them in this Re
publican city.
Don't Swap.
It is rumored around that some Re
publicans in the city are proposing to
trade Blaine off for York. That ia, they
offer to nivo a vote for Cleveland for
every Democrat that will vote for York,
Of course the Democrats have better
sense than to entertain such a propo
sition. They have votes enough to elect
both Cleveland and Scales by a large
majority if they can get them to the
ba'lot box.
A gentleman who was present at the
speaking at Newport yesterday says the
crowd was large and enthusiastic and
that Hon. C. C. Clark made one of the
best speeches he had heard. He thinks
that much good was accomplished by
the speech. Mr. Clark will address the
Club in this city to-night. Turn out
and hear him.

Mr. EDrrORi-Several office-holders The registration books of the city can
employed by the government having re-l be found at the following places:
turned for the purpose of voting, it is
claimed that persons living in the Dis
trict of Columbia do not loose citizen
ship in their native or adopted State, as
the case may be, and that they nave a
right to vote therein at a Presidential
election. , We doubt the validity of such
claim t-but even admitting that it is true,
we submit that they nave no rignt to
register or vote in any country unless
they have been residing therein at least
ninety days prior to the day of election.
A man, even from an adjoining
county, no matter how true a North
Carolinian he may be, or how well his
citizenship may be established, oannot
register and vote in Craven unless he
has been a resident thereof ninety days,

If those gentlemen desired to vote
here, they should have returned in

the State, and not waited until it was
too late to acquire citizenship in the
county wherein they propose to vote.
The law requires all parties registering
to swear that they have been a resident
of the county ninety days. Can any

Albany, Oa. 29 Gov. Cleveland,
accompanied by his private secretary,
Col. Lamont, leaves to-morrow morning
at 10 o'clock for Hew ilaven, Conn
returning to Albany the same night.
On Saturday morning he leaves here for
New York for the purpose of reviewing
a parade of the business men, returning
to Albany Saturday night. Governor
Cleveland will go to Buffalo to vote and
will return to the capitol Tuesday night,
receiving the returns of the election at
the executive chamber.
A.UGUSTA, Ga. Oct. 29. For several
days past there have been rumors afloat
of a heavy defalcation on the part of
George F. Jackson, president of the En
terprise cotton factory, and a committee
was appointed to investigate the books
of the company. Jackson confesses to
the defalcation, but cannot give the
amount. He claims all responsibility
for the deficit. Enough is already
known from the investigating commit
tee, however, to state that the defalca
tion is over $60,000 and may reach
$100,000. The money, it is stated, was
lost in various operations. iNotwith
standing the defalcation the company is
reported to be solvent and the mill will
continue to run until the stockholders
meeting, November 8. The matter
creates surprise, as Jackson has been
one of the most prominent and public
spirited citizens.
