Not a drop of rain has . fallen to prevent "work. F. M. Simmons, Esq., made a rousing speech at Beaufort on Wednesday night. Col. Jke Young made a speech at the - same time but not to the same crowd. Mr. Simmons asked for a joint discus sion and division of time, but the Colo nel would not consent to a fair division. ; So Simmons took the crowd and his own time while Col. Young enjoyed his own without much crowd. i A postal card from Raleigh informs us that Mr. T. P. ' At the court house there was another gathering addressed by Col. Ike Young, W. S. 'O'B. Robinson, Daniel Stimson and others. We could not be at both speakings, for when Burkhead turned loose in the Club room wo had no dispo sition to divide time.1 We would have been pleased, however to have beard all these gen- tiemen, as we nave no doubt they pre sented their side of the question strong as could be The Democratic gathering was quite as large as that of the Republicans, which speaks well for them in this Re publican city. Don't Swap. It is rumored around that some Re publicans in the city are proposing to trade Blaine off for York. That ia, they offer to nivo a vote for Cleveland for every Democrat that will vote for York, Of course the Democrats have better sense than to entertain such a propo sition. They have votes enough to elect both Cleveland and Scales by a large majority if they can get them to the ba'lot box. A gentleman who was present at the speaking at Newport yesterday says the crowd was large and enthusiastic and that Hon. C. C. Clark made one of the best speeches he had heard. He thinks that much good was accomplished by the speech. Mr. Clark will address the Club in this city to-night. Turn out and hear him. Totals. 14,545 13,443 SECOND DISTRICT. Governor Cleveland will go to Buffalo to vote and will return to the capitol Tuesday night, receiving the returns of the election at the executive chamber. A.UGUSTA, Ga. Oct. 29. For several days past there have been rumors afloat of a heavy defalcation on the part of George F. Jackson, president of the En terprise cotton factory, and a committee was appointed to investigate the books of the company. Jackson confesses to the defalcation, but cannot give the amount. He claims all responsibility for the deficit. Enough is already known from the investigating commit tee, however, to state that the defalca tion is over $60,000 and may reach $100,000. The money, it is stated, was lost in various operations. iNotwith standing the defalcation the company is reported to be solvent and the mill will continue to run until the stockholders meeting, November 8. The matter creates surprise, as Jackson has been one of the most prominent and public spirited citizens. Journal Office, Oct. 80, 0 P. COTTON. New York futures firm; spots quiet.
