" Editor Journal: The Dialec tic and Philanthropic Societies, de siring to record ; the names .and deeds of their members, have ap pointed committees . to publish catalogues. - This task is a difficult one unless the people of the State, and the alumni especially, will aid us. If any one will send information about old members of either society, they will do a great favor to the societies, and particularly to us, their agents. We wish information if the member - is dead or if be has held any position of public trust and confidence. If you, sir, will publish the above and request other papers to copy, you will render us a very great eer- . vice, N. H. D. Wilson, jr., Di. S. B. Weeks, Phi. Society or the Cincinnati. Editob Jotjenal: In the New Berne Jotjenal of Feb. 15 is a statement that the venerable Asso ciation of the Cincinnati has ceased to exist. This is a mistake; it still has a flourishing existence in seven of the original thirteen Colonies, five of these being Northern States, while South Carolina and Maryland represent the South, u Chapters formerly existed in North Carolina and Virginia, and these should be revived; for in those States there are many descendants of Revolutionary officers, and all such are entitled to membership in the Cincinnati. ' Our Maryland Society isa'vig orons one, and the annual dinners ou Washington's birtuaay are ae lightful reunions. Each State Society regulates its own affairs; but there is also a general organi zation,- of which . Hon- Hamilton Fish, of New York, is now Presi dent, and which holds triennial meetings. At these all the branches of the Associatiou are represented, and the President, for the time being, wears Washington's golden badge, which has been regularly transmitted to bis successors in office. '' Motion to adjourn over till Tues day, in recognition of Washington's birthday, was adopted. . The Boot on the Other Leg. It is .notorious that England's idian Empire was built up more by bribery, diplomacy and treachery than by victories won fairly in the field. From the days of Clive, who played the false treaty game on the Bengalee Omichund, down to the very last rebellion against British rule, the English have played one native prince against another, pur chased allies and set afloat all sorts of intrigues ' to make the people they were terrorizing cut each other's throats and save trouble to the invaders. -The ) wars against Uy der All and his son Tippoo Sahib, the suppression of the great Sepoy rebellion and all the conflicts known to history are records of the cor rupting use of British gold, the treachery of the natives and the successful use ot fraudulent and un fulfilled promises. ; f . . El Mahdi in the Soudan seems to have studied British policy in India to advantage. Ar. Y. World. : ; , . . ; . Origin of the Amulet A kind of odoriferous amulet, said to be made in Persia, is sold in New York bazaars and is becoming very popular among New York ladies. A Turk in the trade gives this history of the origin of the amu let: V -;':.; ; "The legend of the amulet is well known by all women in the Orient. Many years ago Genghis Lhan, the great Tartar warrior, overran Per sia. The Shah's harem was cap tured at Teheran, comprising some 300 or 400 , beautiful odalisques. These became at once favorites with the hero, but his family was already so large and included so many pretty wives he could not distin guish his Persian from his Tartar wives. f In order to be able to do, so, be resorted to the expedient of attaching amulets, perfumed highly, around their necks, which proved quite successful. The hieroglyphics on the obverse side of the charm are supposed to represent the Lhan signature and his proclamation warning others not to interfere with his property. For hundreds of years the amulet was handed down as an heirloom and - protection - against evil.' When the Turkish race be came the conquerors oi the East they captured these charms and put on the reverse side the crescont, star and the word kismet. - Then after many years the Shah permitt ed the charms to be manufactured and sold as a boon to the human race." - As He Was Saying. At one of the theaters the other evening a man who had a seat between his wife and daughter left it at theclose of an act for . a trip down stairs. When he returned he found a ' va cant seat two rows back between two women, and dropped into . it with the remark: ' . "As 1 was; saying when I went out, it's none of your pudding what other women wear. Because some one else makes a fool of herself by weanng cotton stockings in the winter, it doesn't follow that you must do the same." "Sir!" came from both sides of him at once, and the way he vacated that seat made the soles of his boots red-hot. Boston; Feb." 21.
