The same thing ia true of tbe church ana of the dormitory. I noticed that when f ather Joseph cook me into loose places he always put up bis cowl. He wonld not speak even in the old and abandonoed dormitory, where are now only some piles oi grain and two unused beds. The dormitory is an additional liiiniship. The beds oonsist of slate covered by thin, hard mattresses, over which are coarse covers. Tbe beda are really bunks. They are placed 111 a long doable line dpD the room, and each one is inclosed in a little box-like closet, the parti tions of whioh do not reach the Moor. In Teach room there are. a cracilix and a scourge. 1 1 saw no other article of furs i tore. A cur tain hangs before each doorway. Tbe scourge, or discipline, as it is callod, consists of five stoat oordsjf each knotted in five places, fixed to a wooden handle. Every Friday morning, after the offices c of . the night, the community repairs to the dormitory. Every monk enters his cell, and, at a signal given by the abbot, by stamping on -the floor, every monk, inoluding the abbot himself, whips his bare shoulders with the discipline. The abbot also gives the signal to stop the punishment. The abbot is subject, iu general terms, to the same rules a thoio by which the others live. His bod is the first, ha fits at the head of tbe table; Wtin all reipects he liven like the meanest of the order, except that he may talk. Southern Hivouar. AUVll'K TO MOTIliatK.
