Simmons, Esq. was nominated by the Democrat ot the Zd Congressional district we. predicted that bis canvas of the district would prove to the people that the convention at Wilson had made no mistake. It is a pleasure to note that our predictions have been verified. From every point at which he has spoken come words of praise and approval of his canvass, and encouragement of his election. Last Wednesday he spoke at Henderson, Vance county, and the Quid Leaf gives the following notice of his speech, which we commend to Republicans as well as Democrats : Mr. F. M. Simmons, Democratic nom inee for Congress from this district, spoke here yesterday. This was Mr. Simmons' first appearance on the hust ings in our county and we dare say few who heard htm went prepared for such a speech as they had the pleasure of listening to. It was in every way a splendid effort, and if "Simmons" lacked for friendi and admirers before he did not after he had finished. In deed, he not only made friends, but enthusiastic admirers, yesterday. Mr. Simmons spoke about one hour and twenty minutes and was heard by a large number of people, the courthouse being filled with representatives of both parties and races. The laree number of colored peoplo present was notice able. It is not declaring too much to sny that Mr. Simmons proved himself a tet ter speaker than even his friends and sopporlers expecWd, and it wag admit ted by all that a better political speech has not been made in Vance county. It was a plain, practical, dispassionate discussion of the points at issue in State and National politics, treated in an able and logical manner, calculated to do great good to the cause and to make votes for himself among both parties. Mr. Simmons spoke confident ly of his election and gave good reasous upon which he baaed his calculations and why members of both parties and races should vote for him. His speech was free from abuse of his two oppo nents O Tlara and Abbott, and whili he arraigned the Republican party and held it to strict account for its many and grievous wrongs, he did it in the spirit of dignified and manly argument and his words will tell. There is no question about Mr. Simmons' election if the Democrats of the second district ill do their duty abd go to the polls in solid phalani and vote for him on'the 2d day of November. Now let the Democrats of Craven oounty see that every voter is regis tered and got to the polls. Craven ought to give Simmons a large vote. Tha Speaking at Croalaa. Yesterday W. A. Dunn, Eq., our candidate for solicitor, in company with Messrs. Clement Manly, M. DeW. Stevenson, P. H. Pelletier and 0. H. Ouion, went down to Croatan where a large number of the citizen met them. Mr. Dunn went down to meet the people and talk to them that they may see what manner of man be is. We are pleased to learn that all who meet him like him and will oast their votes for him in November. He regrets that be cannot visit other places in the county, and aee more of our people; and we re gret it also because the more we see him the better we like- him and we know that by meeting onr people and mingling with them they will be con vinced that he is the proper man for solicitor. Messrs. Manly, Stevenson, Ptlletier and Ouion also made short speeches and aroused the people to oome out and register and vote. The speech, of Mi. Pelletier is spoken of in very compli mentary terms. A full vote will be polled at that precinct. The man uf wealth, influence and respectability never takes his first drink in tbe low groggery: it is always tbe gilded dun, the "respect able saloon that catches him. His self- respect would not permit him to enter one of the "low-down" places. Washington, Oct. 21, It is today learned that the district attorney of Arizona recently represented to the Attorney-Oeneral that sufficient evi dence was obtainable to convict Geron imo and his braves of murder before a civil tribunal, and that in view of the fact Governor Zulick, of Arisona, had requested the President to cause the military officers to surrender the hos tile to the civil authoritiee of the Ter ritory for trial. Notwithstanding this reaneat. the action of the President in ordering the confinement of the Indians at Fort Pickens, Fla., is aooepted at tbe War Department as oonolusive eyidence of the intention of the government to treat them aa prisoners of war, snd not as ordinary marauders, amenable to civil jurisdiction.
