The election retame oetns In slowly, an indication of considerable scratch- ing. We give elsewhere the rote as far as heard from to 1 a. We cannot understand the vote at Core creek for Simmons. It is reported that the tickets were destroyed; but what were the Democrats doing to al low snch a thine, and could they not write tickets? The county returns indicate that Clark and Lane and the coalition ticketi is in doubt. The official count will be necessary to decide. The Democrats, so far as we can learn, except those cod noc ted with the railroad and a few others who advised the coalition movement in the beginning bnt turned their backs on it after they had gotten the party into it, gave it a hearty sup port. The Hahn crowd made a break on the Oth precinct of the 5th ward. Stimson's stronghold, and instead of the oue hundred and fifty majority ex pected for the ooalition ticket, it gave over one hundred majority against it. Stiinaon has always had a strong fol lowing in that precinct as the vote of 1883 showed, and his friends claimed up to yesterday morning that he still held them, but the votes have gone the other wsy. But notwithstanding this the vote is olose and the coalition ticket may yet be elected. The ind iCHtioDH are that Simmons is elected. F1U8T WAHI) Svpreme Court. Smith 120 Buxton 21 Superior Court. Mr. Olsveland's Minister to England. On the day that Cleveland was nom inated Edwin J. Phelps was sitting on the veranda of the Rockingham House at Portsmouth, N. H., talking with As sociate Justice Gray of the United States Supreme Court. The business of Mr. Phelps in Portsmouth at that time was to argue a case before Mr. Justice Gray. An old aoquaintance going by stopped and said to Mr. Phelps: "I see by the bulletin boards that you have a Presidential oaadidate. " Mr. Phelps looked up inquiringly, and his friend said: "It IsGrover Cleveland." "You dont mean it?M exclaimed Mr. Phelps in apparent great surprise. "Yes," replied bis friend, he bas received the nomination. Do you know him? "No, ssid Mr. Phelps, "I never saw aim." Well, tell me," asked his friend. "what sort of a fellow is he, any how 'r"' There was a silenoe of some moments, when Mr. Phelps looked up and said: "I will tell you what sort of a fellow he is. He is about a fifth-rate lawyer. Well, you may know what sort of a sawyer he la when he abandons his pro fession to become Sheriff ol Buffalo, and br accident he was made Mayor, and by a turn of the wheel of fortune he became Governor or new iotx, ana now he has been nominated, so you say, for President. Of course he will be defeated. The Democratio party never had such a good opportunity to elect its candidate as it bas this time bnt thev have nut un Cleveland, whom nobodv knows, and he is unfit and de feat is certain. If they had nominated Bayard, his election would have been a foregone conclusion." Justioe Gray sat quietly by, but with a roguish twinkle in his eye, and, said the gentleman who tells the story, "Mr. Justice Gray, If he oould be in duced to say anything about the matter, would not deny it," A Deeter'e Weea.
