Judge presiding: 'We, the Grand Jury, beg leave to re port that we have examined the poor house of Craven ouunty and find it property and cleanly kept. There are now fourteen inmates and are under good discipline and are kept a part as to sex and color. The food, and bed olothing are not suffioieot and tbe buildings need some repairs to make them comfortable duiicg tbe winter months. Represen tative frtm the Ore departments of Portsmouth, Norfolk, Richmond, and Petersburg met at Portsmouth tonight for tbe purpose of organizing a State Firemen's Association. The object be ing to bring the firemen of the State nearer to each other In studying the bst means of fighting Hree, and also to form a relief aseooistlon for the benefit of men injured or killed while in ser vice. Chief W. T. Robinson, of Portsmouth called the meeting to order, and after stating the object for which it was called, a number of letters were reed f 10m chiefs and other men from Boa- nuke, Staunton, Lynchburg and other cities, regretting that they could not be present, but asking to be enrolled as members of the association. . Chief A. L. Fuoua, of the Richmond Department, was present with his men, and a fine body they ware. : Chief Fuqna was unanimously elected temporary chairman and Chief Curtis, of Petersburg-, was elected secretary. Committees on organization and con stitution were appointed. -,. There were about sou firemen present at tbe meeting and their names wort enrolled. 1 . - A grand banquet and torchlight pro cession will be given tomorrow night. A large number of influential lodges nave voted almost to man against any such move. Beveral of the smaller lodges are inclined to identify themselves with the Knights of Labor, so that, to use their own ex pression, "tbe conflict against capital can be more formidable on the part of labor." While the great body of the members seem to be opposed to merg ing the Amalgamated Association in the Knights of Labor, tbe movement to organize in both unions is still going on. Thir ty corpses have thus far-been taken from the nit. It is belteved that a sum ber of others perished- and that many nave been more or lees injured, A Fatal Affair la Pitt County. A Petersburg, Vs.. special says that in an atrrav in rut county, north Caro lina, between Thomas Smith and John Dennis, ths latter shot and killed the former. Friende of Smith then assault ed Dennis and out him nearly to death with a large knife. It is not thought that Dennis can recover. Heavy Verdict Against Ben Butler. BO8TO5.
