We notice seveisl of our exchangee indulging in a little gush of noble senti ments on the surrender of Oen. Iee at Appomattox. One makes an error in the date, having it April 10, vibereae, it ocourred on the Oth. But another get way off the line, and places the number of Confederates st forty thou sand, when in fact it was less than ten thousand who were surrendered on that memorable day. It further says that General Les surren dered his sword as commander and Chief of the Southern armies to General Grant, whereas it is well known that General Lee surrendered only the forces under hi immediate command otherwise tbe battle of Bentonsville would not have been fought, nor would Durham and Green? boro become noted as the headquarters of General Shermao and Gen. Joseph E. Johnston during the negotiations for the surrender of the force under the command of the latter chieftain. The Journal in what it said we believe had everything right except spelling Appomattox with but one "t Cation la Checks Again. We publish today a communication direct from Mr. C. B. Ferrell, Mont gomery, Ala., in reply to Dr. J. W Sanders. In thi Mr. Ferrell giyes the exaot amount of manure used, and in his letter to Rev. Mr. Sanderlin he gives particulars as to the manner of prepar ing hi lanL. manuring planting and cultivating. We have no right to dis credit hU report- We believe it is true. We can naraiy expect such results in North Carolina from cotton because our olimate is not so favorable for the growing of this crop as that of Ala bama and Georgia. But, that a great improvement can be made in the man ner of manuring and cultivating cannot be denied. It is lea expensive to make tea bales of oottoa oa five acre than ' to make five bales' on -ten or fifteen scree. We commend Mr. Ferrell' plans to the farmer! of this section. If followed, bearing in mind, as the New$ and Ob- server suggests, the difference in cli mate, on account of which less distance between the checks will be required in North Carolina, w arc sure our farm srs will not regref the experiment. ' : Marahall Parks Appointed. WaSBTSOTOX, April .-'-The President todsy appointed Marahall Parks to be supervising inspector of steam vessels for the Third District, la place of Jams Ourraa, of Maryland,, who was twice nominated to that office and who failed of confirmation each' time. . Mr. Park i resident of Norfolk and a promi aent Democrat. " He was not an appli cant for the position, but his snpoint- meat was strongly urged by many ta- fluential Democrats. It was charged by Curran's friends that Senator Gor man pocketed his nomination, and that tbey persistently urged the President to continue -sending in the name until ' it was acted upon:- Tbia the Mugwumps ; insisted upon a in the interest in clean of politic. - The President, however, came so the conclusion that he would not be nominated in following such a course. Slaughter has returned from a trip to Kansas, the far west, and takes issue with Horace Greeley about the advisability of young men going to such a region of grasshoppers, blizzards and cyclones. He says he would not give Lenoir county for the whole of Kansas. There is no plat like Eastern Carolina. The contest on local option will be pretty warm. The Pro can bring to their assistance now tbe testimony of the old Confederate Postmaster General and now U. S. Senator from Texas, John hi. Keagan, to show that it is slander upon the Democratic party and I nomas Jefferson to put them in de fence of the dram shop and drunken ness. Jesse C. Kennedy, Esq., after hearing Mr. Slaughter's description of Kansas is reminded that while cries for help have come from almost every quarter or the Union on account of drouth, floods, cyclones, &o., Eastern North Carolina has so far been able to take care of herself, and be is convinced it is the best oountry in the world con sidering all things. Several of our substantial and most successful business men are consider ing the enterprise of a cotton factory. They will examine the matter thor oughly before investing in it, but when tbey make up their minds to go into it they will make it a suooess. Investiga tions are also being made as to tbe manufacture of soap. Kinston must begin enterprises of this sort or her progress must necessarily be slow in the future. Tbe mercantile interest is now fully up to the demands of the farming interest and we must needs have factories to make a demand for the surplus farm products and build up the retail trade of the town. The Funeral ef Burgwju M. Gates. At three o'olock in the afternoon of Sunday. April till, 1867, the funeral of Burgwyn M. Gates took place from the Baptist Church on Middle street in this city. The first sound of the bell which called the solemn assembly, found the streets leading to the church already thronged with people from every direc tion, wending' their way to pay the last aaa trmute or ' love and respect to one who in the midst of a busy and useful life had been called from the cares of this world to the joyful rest of the world beyond. The Sunday-school of which he was the superintedent, ami had bten fur several years, numbering over two hundred and fifty children, were noon in place, as was also the coDgrtKntiuL of which he had long been one of the most regular and punctual attend an u upon all of its Services. To theee were added the Uethodibt Episcopal SuLda -school, officers, teachers aud children in a body, liumbenn nearly three hundred persons. Then came the sol emn procession, with measured step, from the house of the deceased, under the direction of Mr. J. A. Simpson, undertaker, with John ( '. W'hitly. J. V Williams, Dr. J. U. The lode of tlie lioyal Arcanum ledlhe march, in advauceof the hearse, which was closely followed by a line of carriages, containing the be reaved wife, parents and immediate relatives of the departed, in the re:ir of which a long column of frienda and neighbors crowded the tiJewalk.who bad assembled at the residence to join the mournful escort to the church The casket was placed in front of the altar and lay in pao?ful vrandeur where the now silent occupant had so often joined in prayers and praise. The oburch waa handsomely draped and me norai teetimouiais w eru numerous and of tne richest and rarest varieties. Notable among them was a Iarire pillow of immortelles from theHapu-t Sunday school, bearing the inscription, ' i)ur Superintendent;'' a lovely sheaf of wheat, mounted on un easel, with a sickle beside it, wrought, as w as the inscription "Our Friend," in immor telles, from Mr. Alexander M linker an anchor the emblem of hope - hand somely formed of while and yellow immortelles from Mr. John K. Foy; an immense collection of floral gift from the relatives aud friends of tbe deceased, who were aware of the great attachment he had for and the interest he always look in the cultivation of flowers. Tbe impressive services at the church wereconducted by Rev. Dr. Theodore Whitfield, pastor of the deceased, as sisted by Rev. L. W. Crawford of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The music waa in accord with the surrounding circumstances and of sublime solemni ty. Every available seat in tbe vast edifice was occupied and large numbers were standing in the aisles and vestibule while still others were gathered around the entrances even out into the street. The little sparrows which nestle in great profusion in the ivy which clings so gracefully to the building, seemed to intuitively understand that there was something unusual transpiring within the saored walls and were interested spectators of the mournful column as it moved off from tbe church towards tbe cemetery. The funeral procession was un doubtedly the largest that has ever been in this city. It was a bright sunny day such as the month of April gives, and the whole community was moved as by one im pulse to join in the solemn cortege. The services were conolnded at the grave, and when the remains had been oommitted to tbe ground to await the great morning of tbe resurrection, when the earth and sea shall give up their dead, the floral offerings were placed over them, and seemed to say to the sorrowing hearts, in the language of our Saviour at Bethany, "thy brother shall rise again. " In the sweet sereni ty of the Sabbath evening were con cluded the last solemn rites of tbe christian church to one who by a life of devotion to christian duty, a consistent walk and godly conversation, had at tained an eminent claim to all the rich promisee of the christian faith. abtice to mothers.
