At a meeting of the board of direc
tor of the Neuse and Trent lliver
Steamboat Company, held on tbt, 19th
day of April, 1887, it wan. on tflotiou,
requested that tbe undersigned be ap
pointed a committee to prepare resolu
tions of regret on the death of our late
associate and member, B. M. Gates.
Whereas, By the death of Mr. W. M.
Ualae this board has been deprived of
one of its most valued and trusted mem
bers. Resolved, That the hoard of directors
of the Neuse and Trent River Steamboat
Com pan v desires to express its deep
sense of loss in his death, and to testify
its appreciation of hi. high and un
blemished character as a business man
and a citizen and his uniform courtesy
as a gentleman, and further
Resolve, That the acquaintance with
hie character for many years on the
part of the members of this board, both
officially and individually, has led
them to recognize and testify to his
sterling integrity and the high sense of
honor, the steadfast devotion to duty
and the unselfish performance of chari
table trusts which were pronounced
and characteristic features of his life,
and
Resolve, That these resolutions be en
tered upon the minutes of this board in
testimooy of its sense of loss, and that
the secretary transmit a copy thereof to

Cleveland acquainting him of the fact.
Mr. Brown has just received an answer
from tbe President, in which he say;
"I received your recent letter inform

daughter and stating that you have
named them after Mrs. Cleveland and
myself. I realize ths interest attached
to an event so unusual. The compli
ment paid in tbe selection of name ia
such a case is therefore also unusual,
and I beg to express our appreciation
of the oonrteou regard which prompt
ed a thought of us in this connection."

Kugene Creighton. of the I uiled
States training-ship Saratoga, at New
Iort, K. I., is missing, and it is feared
that he may hare committed suicide in
fit of despondency under which he
appeared to be laboring.
Commodore Schley, V. 8. N., ohief of
the bureau of equipment and recruit
ing Thursday inspected the training-
ships Jamestown, Saratoga. Portsmouth,
and New Hampshire, at Newport, K. 1.,
and found them in good condition.
It is believed that Dr. Charles Hruil,
who recently committed suicide in the
county jail at Dodgeville, Wis., while
under arrest for poisoning his wife, was
Dr. John Bender, jr., a member of tbe
notorious Bender family of murderers.
The residence of Jacob Wagoner,
near Tionesta, Pa., was robbed by five
men Wednesday. Mrs. Wagoner was
in the bouse at the time, and was
forced to tell where the money was.
The father and eon came to Mrs. Wag
oner's assistance and one of the robbers
was shot and killed.

AND TWO OTHERS WOUNDED.
Three small negro boys were instant
ly killed and two others wounded, by a
single discharge from e shot-gun yester
day morning about six o'clock. The
scene of the tragedy watt by the river
side just beyond the depot of the Caro
line Central Heitroad. I he shooting
was done by a colored boy named Grant
Beat, aged about 17 years. The victims
are-
Alex. Fillyaw, aged 13 years, killed.
Charles Baker, aged 18 years, killed.
Edward Smith, aged 18 years, killed.
Ed. Fillyaw, aged 14 years, seriously
wounded.
Ben, Cronly, aged 13 years, slightly
wounded .
Fillyaw, Baker and Smith were killed
instantly, the upper part of their bodies
and their head being perforated with
shot. Fillyaw was shot in the right arm
and body, but his wounds are not con
sidered serious. Ben. Cronly, the other
wounded boy, received one of the pel
lets of shot in hi right oheek.
The weapon which was used with
such deadly effect was a comon double-
barrelled shot-run. Only one barrel
wa dieeharged. It waa loaded with a
heavy charge of duck-shot.
Grant Best and the viotims of bis
shotgun, together with other boys of
about tbe same age, were employed to
shoot rioe birds on a plantation across
tbe Point Peter. The boy named were
seated on a log near the river waiting
for a boat to take them over. While
they were waiting Best approached
oocniog from the direction of hie home.
When he got within about thirty or
forty feet of the group be pointed the
gun at them and fired. Best says that
he did not know that tbe gun was
loaded. He had lust borrowed it, end
tbe man from Wbom he got it did not
tell htm that, it was loaded, lie said
that there were no oep on the tube.
Upon Best' discovery of the fatal re
sults of hts ffrin the gun he ran to the
boy, exclaiming, "I did not go to do
it" Some one came up and told him
that he had better go for a doctor.
