Notwithstanding the threatening weather a good crowd attended the memorial services yesterday, and the txercis.8 were i m p n laiiire. ai)d j n t nmst -ing. The regular mail train fsom Morehead City brought in quite a num ber, and a special arrived at U o'clock from La Grange bringing the Davis Cadets, one hundred and fifty strong, under the command of Col. A. C. Davis, and a number of oitiaens and ex-Confederate soldiers. The steamer Kin slon also brought down a large crowd from Jolly Old Field and other points aloni; the Neuse. These ith others wbo arrived by private conveyance made up a large audience whioh joined heartily m the exercises to perpetuate the memory of our departed Confed erates. The Davis Cadets lauded al the rail road depot, formed and marched down Vueen street to Graves, to Craven, to South Front, to Middle, to Broad, to Hancock and to the Academy Green where they stacked arms and dispersed. The soldierly bearing of the cadets and their demeanor on the streets after dis persing was highly creditable, and speaks well for the commander and las assistants. At 4 :8U the people began to assemble at the Academy (Ireen, where a stand had been erected by the Ladies Memo rial Association for the orator and the choir. Ibis stand was appropriately decorated with evtrgreens and flags. The Davia Cadets were on dress parade and the large crowd had the pleasure of witneeeicg their skill in the manual of arms, after ibis the bugle sounded, and the 'services at the stand began with music by the choir. Hev. L. W. Craw ford followed with prayer. Next music by the choir, and then followed the ad dress of Major John Hughes. The address was upon the life and sxryices or uen. I,, u. h. nrancn, and was replete with a tine biography of this distinguished son of our State. den. Branch was in his first engage ment of the late war, at this place in March. W1, and from then until the memorable 17th of September of that year, the oontmued activity or bis career wan almost miraculous, ending in the fatal shot at Sharpsburg which released his gallant spirit from the cares and strife of this troublous world. The large crowd gaye close attention to the address, as many of them were carried back to tho days that tried men's souls. In the main, it was the same as that delivered by the Majbr , Raleigh three year age. But it was listened to with such interest that we think it would bear republication. At the conclusion of the address, and after the choir had sang "Guard Around the Tomb," the procosMon formed in the following order: New Beino S. F. K. Cos. Band. Confederate soldiers and sailors. Davis Cadets. Orator and chaplain. F i orators and chaplains. Indies Memorial Association. Children bearing Mowers Citizens. The procession moved to Cedar Grove cemetery to the step of the "Requiem March," rendered by the New Berne S. F. E. Cos. Band. Arriving at the mausoleum, the column halted and the Davis Cadets passed through and took position around the circle. Then the Memorial Association and ohoir pasted and took position within the circle. The children and citizens came next and placed, flowers at the foot of the monument, completely oovering the mound, and filed out right and left, taking position in rear of the Cadets. The ohoir then sang "Peace to the Mem ory of the Brave," which was followed with the Benediction by the Chaplain, Rev. Mr. Crawford. The Cadets then fired a salute by pompeaies, and the Memorial exeroises of 1887 were ended. The monument had been most hand somely decorated by the ladies of the Memorial Association to whom we are indebted for the annual reunions held in oar city, and we sincerely hope tbeir organisation may be perpetuated, and that our citizens will ever respond when called upon, to assist Jjem. We baare.nere seas a larger audience on the Academy Green, save perhaps in 1884. when the monument was un veiled, and we have never known betr ter attention etyen tQ a Sraior.
