It is edited by Stephen B. Weeks, secretary of the convection. and contains a short, succinct state ment of the nature aad aims of the Association, by Rev. Itob't Htrange of JUloigh, It also contains much in formation concerning the progress of the work In North Carolina, but to us the work is marred by a statement con cerningour dear old city, which is a gross misrepresentation or tacts as every Intelligent man in New Berne will testify. On page 20 is the folio ing paragraph in black letter type . New items baa four ebttrchas and about "two hundred" barrooms The Association oan reach more young men than by any other means. Aid it. We don't remember ever to bav seen a statement in any publication of the character of thi pamphlet so utterly at variance with tke facts, and so c.aleu la ted to produce an unfavorable ioi prestrion about our city. Whoever gave tins information; doubtless had good intentions, bo I be1 did not stop to think. There are twenty-one licensed bar-rooms in New Berne, and not about "two hundred." There are in th,e neighborhood of twenty churches in stead of four. To enumerate, we have for w kites. Baptist, Methodist, Episco pal, Presbyterian and Catholic churches where services are regularly held, the Disciples are building quite a handsome little ohuroh, and the church of the Adventists has been recently organized and hold regular services. For the colored people w oaa count about tea without stopping to reflect and we are aatiaAeo) there are at least a doean or more. As the city has credit for the bar- room kept by colored- per sous, and tea time more, it is but right to give her credit foe the number of ohred churches sheiias. The Young Men's Christian Associa tion of this city are doing a good work and we are ever ready to en cob rag and aid them as far as we can, but we know the members thereof will not en dorse tbi statement in the Journal of Proceeding of the State Convention which ha been published and scattered throughout the land. About "two hundred" bar-rooms in a city of seven thousand, inhabitants : one bar-room to every) thirty-five 1 1 Four churches in a city of seven thousand inhabitants; one for every J eighteen hundred !
