For shout two weeks past the Captain, a dacata little lady, hat been left alone with such as sistance as the converts aad member I of churches ia the city rendered bar. On Saturday night a "Brigadier Major", and wife and Adjutant Beall and wife arrived and the theatre was packed Saturday evening, Sunday and Sunday evening. About twenty recruits were sworn in, and many others declared that they had. heen- saved through the efforts of the Army We believe it is generally conceded that they have done much good; that they have drawn to their meetings many persons who would not for some cause attend the churchee, and by hav ing attended these meetings have been induced to reform their habits and they boldly proclaim that they are saved. Whether or Dot they are saved is not for us to Bay, but we read in the Testa ment of our Lord and Saaiour Jeaut Christ that Pater when -he stood qp on the day of Pentecost and oonvinoed the multitude there assembled that the same Jesus whom they had with wicked hands crucified and slain, God had raised from the dead, and being pricked in their hearts they cried out, men and brethren what shall we do, he said unto them, "repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Chrxt for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ohoet." The Church of Christ was organized, according to our under standing of the Scriptures, for the con version of sinners and the sanotification of aaimts, and the plan o jsJnttjdh was declared by the apseUes Ay fer day as Ihey preached the word . There is a number of organizations in this city claiming to be the Chnrch of Christ or a branch thereof, and a plea for this institution recently appeared in the HiUu ul Recorder, published at ltaleigh is so strongly presented that we dsem it not inappropriate in connection with this subject. Whether or not the Salva tion Army claim to save people with out the church or obedienoe to the gos pel we are not prepared to say, but the writer of the article below seems to think both these things are necessary: the ninuii IS IN TBS JVQJtLD. 1. Pamlico Court. The Superior .Court of Pamlioooounty convened yesterday, Judge Avery, pre siding. Messrs. Clement Manly, P. II Pelletier. L. J. Moore, W. E. Clarke and W. W.Clark, of the New Berne bar. and B. F. Maybe w, Esq., of the Golds boro bar are in attendance. The Episcopal Couvcnlion at Edeutou. The delegates to tbis assembly from Christ Churoh, Newbern, though prob ably more severely taxed in their phy sical strength by the long and tedious journey than any others, speak in grate ful and glowing terms of ike delightful entertainment accorded them. Ed en ton is beautifully situated, autfris the home of intelligence, culture and old lime hospitality. Some of the noblest resi dences in the State are there. Brightly looking out on the bay, through the leafy foliage of splendid trees, is the elegant home of the Pages, whose kindly master and brilliant mistress would adorn any mansion or eetate. Directly opposite is the residence of the Shep- bards, perhaps the most costly and richly furnished duelling in the city, and the hospitality of whose owners added greatly to the pleasure of the convention. On the eastern side of the bay, and only a short distance from Eden ton, ia the palatial abode of the Woods. Built in 1S11, without regard to expense, by the Johnson family, fur nished throughout in the most complete and elegant manner, and sarrounded by grounds which more resemble the tasteful bUnning of an old English estate, the Visitor is absolutely dazzled by what he. sees. Many other homes there are occupied by genial and edu cated people, wbere the deputies found delightful repose from the tedium of travel, and were made happy by the generous treatment bestowed upon them. Edenton may be remotely situ ated, and difficult to reach, but it is a gem of the waters, and takes a strong hold on the stranger " -heart by its quiet, polished character and warm. Unaffected manners. The time of the convention was taken up as usual by much necessary routine business. The reports of oommittees showed a fair degree of prosperity in thaf&ytddlal and spiritual affairs of the ohureh. The discussions were always conducted with good sense, good tem per, and a wise regard to utility and propriety. It may be safely said of this estimable body of clergymen and laymen, that, while scaroaiy ever rising to any exalted plane of speculative legislation, they can always be trusted to say and do the right thing for the pro motion of religious truth. The next session of the convention will be held in Fayetteville. G. News from the Grange. Editor Jousmal-As I know in&nv of your readers'wHf be disappointed if they do not hear something from the Grange, I will tell them what I done last week: I did not spend but three days in the work. It offers no speculative inducements. It has no special class of policy-holders who are to get the dividends earned and forfeited by others. It has no stockholders to absorb profits diroctly or indirectly. Every policy holder is. therefore, sure of getting his insurance at its actual cost to the company y, nr by year; the surplus earned being re turned to him at the end of each year It selects its risks with groat care and ih tbe healthy sections of our own country, only. It seeks aw business only at such cost as will enable it to continue to give insurance atdas low a cost, at least as heretofore, a&lar as the fall in the rat of interest win permit. Each policy bow issued provides tfiat. in case of lapse after two or three years' premiums are paid, it is fully paid up for an amount staled upon the policy, without any action on the part of the insured; alio gives large cash values after ten years, which are print ed in figures in the policy: hence each member will get all be pays for. and nothing of what any other member pays for.
