An inquest waa held, which re sulted in the arrest and imprisonment of her Lusb&nd, Charles F. Jones. On the ffrst day of the court, at the spring term, 1867, the grand jury returned a true bill of indictment for murder. The prisoner was arraigned, and not being able to employ counsel. Hie Honcr Judge SbipfS, aatigned as counsel, Hon. P. M. Simmons, Messrs. L. J. lLoore, P. H. Pelletier and W. W. CUrk. Solicitor Geo. H, White appeared alone for the State. The trial was set for Wednes day, June 1st, and a special venire of one hundred ordered. Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock court was called, a considerable crowd in addition to the rpecial venire being present. The special venire being called, So licitor White called the witnesses (or the State and announced his readiness for trial. The prisoner's counsel, after some delay to ascertain if witnesses were present, announced that they were ready to proceed. The following gentlemen of the regu lar panel were sworn as jurors: Oliver Mitchell, col., W. R. Dunn, Noah Powers, col., W. L. Oaskina and W. N. Tingle. From the special venire. The evidence was that the prisoner married in Ooto ber,1885, Tempa S. Ciuca(K), May 80 The great three mile race between Uanlan and Gaudaur occurred at the Calumet course today for the championship of America and $6,000 to stakes. A slight roughness of the water had no deterring iotluence and the start was made with prompt ness. Han Ian was at once a trirle in the lead, pulling a short quick stroke 42 to the minute. Gaudaur kept close to him with a long, steady sweep, about 86 to the minute. Gradually Uanlan forged ahead, and at the end of the first mile was fully a boat length in ad vanoe. It bad been the gossip that if uanlan could lead to tne turn lie was nearly a certain winner, but if Gaudaur reached the buoy first Uanlan would never catch up on a stern chase. Great, therefore, Were the expectations of Banian's friands to see him Bearing the turn clearly ahead of Gaudaur and gaining all the time. The rain now be gan to fall. The lake was soon lumpy from end to end, and the downpour Lwaa almost blinding Uanlan turned first, two lengths ahead; lime, 10.02. He was pulling about 35 atrokes a min ute at tbis point, and rounding to Gaudaur struck about the same gait. Hanlan stopped an instant here for some purpose, but did not lose tne lead, lie kept well to the front from the start until entering the third mile. There Hanlan commenced to flag. So uneven did his stroke beoomevand so great an effort did it seem to require, that many believed his boat was leaking or had shipped ewe of the choppy seas. Gaudaur win rewmr msgninnnniiT ate snowed the long, steady sweep he had taken ft the outset, but faster. With machine-like precision he passed the struggling Hanlan. A boat a length of water between them could be seen. then ' aitofbec, and at last one more. Hanlen a beaten, murmured the crowd. "No, no," shouted others. "See him spurt; see him spurt." And spurt tlanlan did with vengeance. Ihe mul titudes on shore and afloat held their breath, then, regardless of rain, tossed hats and umbrellas in the air and started to- yell like Comaaehes. The cheers died on their line. .'Hanl&a could not stand the pace. nndV again Gaudaur's great sweep began to tell. It was then that Hanlan lay back just an instant, and, turning his face from the rain, shot a glance over his shoulder at Gaudaur., The single glance was enosigh. Banian taw himself irretriev ably beaten. Gaudaur was six lengths to the fore. Seeing Hanlan surrender all hope, Gaudaur magnanimously slackened the speed and passed the stand an easy winner by four lengths Time, 19.80. It was a fine performance under the adverse oondittons. Hanlan was teen by an Associated Press reporter immediately after the race and asked what he thought of the result. 'I do not think the best man won." said Hanlan. "tboueh Iacknowl- edge I irae fairly beaten. u Questioned how that oould be, the- ex-champion grew taciturn and would only say that heMid not wish to make any excuses.
