Judge Ships took hi seat on the bench. Crier Qaidiey made the proclamation and bosinee hegun. The first before the court waa the case of State against Cyrus Weetbtook and Dempaey Bell for larceny of ene ox or steer, the property o; John Henry Jenkins, jr., which was alleged to hare been stolen and taken to Kinston for sale. The witnesses ware called and all answering. A jury was im panelled. After a long list of wit nesses was examined, the case was argued by W. E. Clarke and L. J. Moore for Westbrook; Clement Manly for Bell, and the Solicitor for the Btate. Ills IJonor charged the jury and the case was given tbem. After a short re tirement the verdict of guilty was rendered . The jury, in the case of "Bute ag ainst Guilford Johnson and George Johnson, rendered a verdiot of not guilty. William Moore, who had plead guilty of larceny, was brought in and. aa tenced to three yeajs in the peniten tiary. The defendant was a school teacher and preacher, but in an unfor tunate hour forgot his high and honora ble calling and weat to raising truck in an unlawful way that of pulling up a lot of the fine cabbages of Mr. J. I.. Kheni and taking them over tbe river 10 sell. The case of ttlale against C. E. Foy, one of the justiees of the peace, indicted for failure to return cases tried, was taken up by request, Simmons At Manly attorneys for the defendant. Judge Shipp went to Morehead City last night and will be on hand Monday morning to hold court. Col. George I. Nowiteky arrfved yes terday on the steamer Pamliao from Norfolk. Uoekation of Bible team, olaasio enota tiona from many author,' bright and stirring school songs, and popular church melodies and hymns, were all admirably rendered, and exhibited commendable proficiency. two pupils, Etta Nunn and Mary Gooding recited pieces of original poet ry, in which they repeated ail the counties in North Carolina in rhyme. TJieae were both excellent compositions, and so nearly equal in merit, that each of the yoethful author was re warded with a prize. An exhibition was given of the pro ficiency of tbe school in arithmetic; and certainly it was surprising to wit ness tbe aptness and quickness of many in mental calculations. But the "Oeog graphy Bee" Was Specially arousing. AU the school is divided into iwo sec tions, which are named "Earnett Worker" and "Trya." Considerable rivalry exists between these so-ietiea, and the ambition of each was to ex cell tbe other in answering correctly all kinds of questions upen North Carolina geography. But an end cornea to all good things, and afler long effort, the award fell to the "Earnest Workers,' and among the survivor was Master Milton Hollo well who won tbe prize. (An,! Kiltbn, hew could you beat those girls ? They will pay you for that ') A number of prizes were given, first came a beautiful gold medal, for tbe scholar who ranked best in every department, scholarship, neatness and behavior. t This We won by Mm Mary Gooding. Then a handsome "book was given to the scholar Btandmg llrnt in eaoh of the three grades in the school. These were Misses Sophie Jones, Etta Nunn and Etta Willis. Literatnre prizes were given to Misses Etta Willi and Mamie Wolfendsn, and to Masters Willie Powell and Milton Hollowell. These premiums were delivered by Rev. Messrs. Crawford and Vass, with appropriate comments. Mr. Vass seemed to think he was a boy again, and, going hack to bis school days, gave some old" fashioned and eouad, ad viae about sohoot work. ''And JKn Crawford -went back to those good old time when the teacher 's wholesome exercise was ii hogging the pupils, and the commence ment day wa oelebrated by hi bring ing an extra supply of birches and giv ing a final "dressing" to the whole soboel. And this exhibition is a proof of what a good system of graded schools in New Berne can accomplish for.ua- Here is one of oar own girl to tbe manor born, and trained in the New Berne graded school, who is giv ing her life to the noble work of teach ing, and she ia a "success.
