"I would not wish to change places with any one on earth, and yon and I will go to gether to America, and I will make a fortune. Yon shall hare every, thing yon want " But Miaa did not permit him to go on. "Go to America!" she said. ''Leave my mother and father and all the people I know my sisters and brothers the good pastor who baptized me Maria's little Frittel ! Oh, uo." "It seems lTard,'' said Franz, "but still you know if you stay with your parents, one day they will die and leave you." "You kill me when you say that," sobbed Mina, "but so much the more 1 will not go away." "You do not love me, then," said Franz. Mina only wept. "lu America they grow rich. We will come back with a fortune," said Franz. "In America terybody must live and dress like great folk," said Mina. "They make, but they s end faster, and there it is hard U save. Cousin Audrew writes about it. Aud there they speak English and laugh at foreigners; and if we get rich we will be old and forgotten. 1 will not be 'the beloved Mina,' as 1 am now to my family; and my mother would die of grief. No, l-'rauz, I will not go to Ameri a." "But sinee I go, my wife must,'' said Franz. "I am not jour wife," said Mina, "and since you can make me obey you if 1 marry ou, I will remain single 1 can have but only one father mother, while 1 live. "You refuse me, Franz. Yes," said Mina. "Then 1 willjunin into the pit,' said Franz. He sprang upon the parapet. Mina did not believe that he w onld really jump in. She turned her hack that he might not see her tears. Then a shriek startled her. She turned around, irana was gone. She rushed forward, and saw him lying motionless at the bottom ol tbe pit. and the bears, astonished at his mode of entrance, were all standing quite still, turning their slow heads in his direction. The girl cried aloud for. help, but no one was in sight. The music in the pavilion drowned her shrieks an she uttered them. She looked up at the church clock. The bears were led at six. it still wanted ten minutes ol the time. Ten minutes were sufficient for the bears to kill Franz, even if he were not dead already. To let the reader into the secret, Franz had only half meant to jump of!. He thought,' Mina would call out . "Come hack, and 1 will go anywhere with you." But the el bows of many sweethearts had polished tbe stone very smooth, and he felt it glide beneath his feet as they touched it. Just now he knew nothing; he lay with ahrok eu arm on the stones and gravel, finite insensible. Where are we when wcswoonT What wise man can answer that T Mina would have swooned also, had she leen in the habit of it ; but a Swiss girl, though she might die of home sickness the Swiss do that often seldom faints. An idea possessed her. She remembered that she had her basket of cake with her yet untouched. Opening it, she uttered a cry with w hich the keepers called the bears to feed them, and slowly moved away from her prostrate lover, around the parapet of the pit. The bears looked up. They were fonder of cake than of wood carvers and they clustered under tbe basket. Slowly she dropped the pieces. Happily her supply was munificent. The bears ate and growled, and forgot poor Franz. Y'ou may know that Mina did not. Farther and farther she led them away. The last crumb dropped and was swallowed. "Great heaven ! it Is gone," moaned Mina. "All that remains is to throw myself ,over that they may eat me first before they touch my Franz ;" and I think she would U .ly Cfcr L f to tie Wu-s,Y t.t M.
