The Opening Laat Evening. The long looked for event of the sea son, the opening of Hotel Albert, took place last evening. The fine music dis coursed from the balcony by the New Berne Steam Fire Engine Band was the signal that Hotel Albert was to be chris tened and to throw open its doors for the reception of guests and the acoom modation of the traveling public. Many of onr citizens called during the evening and went through the brilliant ly lighted rooms, and the general ver diet was, "it's a cosy, neat, well fitted up hotel and a credit to New Berne The following bill of fare, prepared by Mr. Gateau, a French cook, and his wife, was served in flood style. Beverages Cotf ee, ice tea, ioe milk. Meats Broiled chicken, fish, tender loin steak. Cold Dishes Cold roast beef, cold corn beef, cold him, cold tongue. t-ggs Eggs, scrambled, poached eggs egg omelets, rum omelets. Breads Tea biscuit, hot rolls, white bread. Radcliff is at present serving in toe capacity of chief clerk, a position that he is well fitted for. This elegant house, a description of whicH iugiyen below, was designed and constructed by Mr. C. J. Scbeelky, architect and builder, of Martinsburg, Va., and was furnished by our Middle street furniture dealer, John Suter: The Hotel Albert is located on Middle street, in the heart of the business por- ion of the city; it is constructed of brick, has 60 feet front and is 165 feel deep. It is three stories in height, the front of the building as well as the in side is furnished in an elaborate and beautiful manuer. The hotel is well supplied with water closets and bath rooms. There are gas fixtures all over the house, and water is carried into every room throughout the building. The water used in the Hotel Albert, for drinking purposes, comes from an artesian well, an analysis of the State Chemist shows it to be very good. The hotel is also furnished with an un limited supply of rain water. From an observatory on the top of the building, there is an extensive and most magnili cent'view of the broad Neuse river the picturesque Trent, and of the extensive forests around New Berne studded with farms. The hotel is constructed ex pressly for the accommodation of tourists with their families; also for in firm persons who are seeking for re newed vigor and health in a climate exempt from the icy blasts of the North, and the torrid heats of the gulf States. There are speaking tubes from each floor connecting with the office. Electric bells in every room. Radiators in every room. There is a first class barber's saloon in the basement. A line billiard room. Also a baggage room. An omnibus line runs in connection with the Norfolk steamers and the At lantic and North Carolina Railroad. There are first class livery stables near the hotel from which good teams can be obtained to visit the places of interest around New Berne. The table will be well supplied from the home market, also from the markets abroad, and will be first class. Every attention will be paid to secure the comfort and happiness of the guests. The average size of the bed rooms in the Hotel Albert is 15 by 18 feet with large windows, and over each door there is a patent transom glass or light ith a - patent transom lifter. The whole building is so constructed that there is a free circulation of air all throughout. Each room has water car ried into it, and the floors are covered either with Brussels or ingrain carpet ing of elegant designs. There are woven spring mattrasses on each bed. The furniture is cherry, rich and elaborate. The special parlor is carpeted with Brussels; the furni ture is of black walnut, covered with crimson plush. There is also an ele gant upright piano of rose wood of rich, full tone, The spacious hall ways on seooria and third floors are twenty feet wide, lighted from' the root-. and are carpeted in Brussels, The dinning room is spacious, well ventilated with with windows on each side with Inside blends. The ceiling is lofty and finished la native wood, and laid off in it beauti ful design; the walls are' of ' French grif with gilt mouldings.' 'In the rear of this beautiful land ooeey dining room is the earring room, and, in the rear Of this room is the kitchen department, so eonatrnoted that no Odor arising from eooking can be discerned in the dinig room. , .! . - j-" The inside walla of the Hotel Albert are, with the exception of tho dining room, of pure white, irrhard finish, and are in beautiful contrast with the rich, bright cherry color of the wood work and also with the furniture of the aame wood. In a word,lHoll Albert is the neatest, most comfortable and the coxiest hotel in the State of North Carolina. Too much credit cannot be awarded to the young, enterprising and energetic proprietor, Mr. J. A. Patterson, for the erection of this hotel. He deserves success. Closing Exercises of Mrs. JerkinB' School. Mr. A. T. Jerkins closed her school yesterday with recitations in reading by the pupils, in the presence of a few invited friends. A prize was offered for the best reader, and Hon. C. It Thomas, Mr. Win. liol lister and 11. S Nunn were selected as judge to decide the contest. The following entered the contest for the prize: Master M. Patterson "The Charge of the Light Brigade' " Miss Bessie Patterson "A Heroine uf Romance. " Master J. Tho judges retired , and after consul tatiou, decided to award the prie fur reading to Miss Bessie Patterson. They were considerably puzzled, however n deciding which was entitled to it, as the contest was so cloee between sev eral of the readers. The happy counte- nanci s of the children seem to acquiesce in the decision, and the judges felt that they had done their duly. The prizes for scholarship and deport ment were presented by Hon. C. R. Thomas and Mr. Wm. Hollister, in beautiful and appropriate words. The occasion was one of pleasure to the chil dren, the teacher and the visitors.
