On Wednesday we accepted an in' vitation from the Board of Trade to visit Morehead City. The M. E. Church Working Society took their annual ex cursion on the same train, in fact was the Working Society's train, but they permitted the Board of Trade to hitch on a car. The trip was a delight ful one, a strong southwest breeae springing up early in the morning and continuing all day. This was our first trip to Morehead since the Teachers' Assembly has been in session, and, as our reporter has failed to report, the first opportunity to speak of the work. Entering the spa cious ball room at the Allantio Hotel we find a large Catherine of teachers, earnestly engaged in the morning exer cises. We were just in time to hear the addresses of Dr. Hume and Mine Corrinne Harrison. Miss Harrison, being one of New Berne 'a daughters, and having acquired almost a national repu tat ion as a teacher, the New Berne visi tors were anxious to see and hear her. We notioe, by the way, that a large pro portion of the Assembly are ladies, and we are glad to see they are coming to the front as teachers. A large number of teachers from New Berne are in at tendance and are watching the proceed ings closely. They have pencil and note book in hand and will not let a good point escape, and we undertake to say they know when a good idea is ad v a need. Professor Neal is on hand. He is booked for a speech during the session and we predict be will give them something good and practical The only exercises we had the pleasure of hearing was the addresses alluded to above. The addreM of Professor Hume, of the University, was on "Arthur and the Round Table," and was a most scholarly and finished production, lie presented quasi historioal accounts of the early settlement of Britain, the speculation of writers and annalists as to the founding by Roman colonists of that obscure region, and the infusion into it of the old heroic blood. He at tempted to show from the literary re mains of the past how the wonderful story of King Arthur and his Knights first took possession of the imagination of men, how it grew into poetry and history, how the lofty oourage but false chivalry of Launcelot and the passion ate but fatal beauty of Queen Guinevere wrought treachery and death to the peerless Mirror of all Knighthood, how the ideal Christian character of Arthur became typical of all purity and stainless self-sacrifice, and how the mythical submersion of the magic sword of the King and his mystio de parture on the hushed and spirit hark! to the islands of the blessed had become the signs to the scholarship and learn ing of all ages of the exile of virtue and Christian heroism. The lecturer then presented a learned and masterly analy sis of the beautiful female characters of Tennyson's story. He told us of the passionate and faithful devotion of Elaine, and showed how in the delicate pencilling of Tennyson's genius she is the Unequalled portraiture of all that is devoted, self -consecrated and perfect in woman. He gave us the poetic and ethical interpretation of the low, soft song in the night, which is the touching pathos of the story of Enid. And he strongly contrasted with all this maze of loveliness the satanic charaoter of Vivien, full of treachery and guile, weaving snares for the unwary feet of 1 Merlin, and bringing the very eclipse of ruin upon all that she approached. Of course it is impossible, in a news paper notice, to do full justice to this learned disquisition. It wasn side of English Literature dimly known to the many, and seldom thoroughly explored even by the few. It was even reckless ly speculative, and in its suggestion of a connection, even in the fanatical brains of dreamers, with the stern ,( practical developments of christian truth, far-fetched and illogical. And we think that the scholarly discussions of professors, even in English Litera ture, should keep prominently forward the idea and lesson of utility, less their pupils should be decoyed too far into the realms of fancy,' .and should take fiction for reality.' Bat after saying mil thiet we doubt whether an address Its equal in ability and scholarly finish has as yet been delivered to the Assembly, and whether its superior will ever be presented to that eu I tared body. Pro fessor Hume is no oratory bat an Im- ioned student, a very idolater at the shrine of the English tongue and history.-? His thoughts and language come to as with the skill of the artist. It fa impossible to catoh. the. delicacy of his touch," or to: iraok. the' outgoings of his analysis. ; Bat we should think that the University had acquired, a. stroog professor when It placed him u its corns of teacher.1 . - a - . The subject of Kiss' Corrinne Harri son 's lecture was "How to Teach. . " It was a well-written paper and was well read . Her voice is not strong enough to fill the large hall, but the teachers gave her strict attention, and doubtless there are many who will be glad to see it in print for future reference. She could not but write well on a subject that shs so thoroughly understands, and the teachers of the Assembly cannot adopt the methods of a more successful teacher. Our stay was short. We Lad not the time to make actiuainlanoee, nor even to more than shake bauds and have a few passing words with old friendf , Major Finger, the superintendent tf public instruction, is on hand aiding in the work of the Assembly, and l'ree; 1 dent Alderman and .Secretary Harrc I seem to be at home in their leeiieclive positions, and are courteous and att,en tire to all. A change in the schedule of the mix ed freight and passenger train between Morehead City and New Berne goes into etleot today. The train leaves New Berne for Morehead City at 4 p. m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, arriving at 7:25, returning will leave Morehead City at 0 a. m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, arriving at New Berne at 12:31. Obeys Orders. Mr. S. F. Teiser, a Uroad street mer chant and member of the Hoard of Trade, went on the excursion to More- head City on Wednesday, but before leaying consulted a physician in regard to bathing. The physician told him it would do him good to go in the surf,' provided he would not stay over fifteen minutes. Wishing to observe scrupu lously the instructions of his physician and fearing to risk his watch in the water, he took a large sized clock with him to set on the shore, the dial facing the ocean, so that he could tell when to get out. Pleasant Vision. The organ of sight, which is the source of so much pleasure as well as benefit to man, is very delioale. A great many persons, not appreciating this, are using cheap spectacles. These glasses, by their imperfect construction and ' blemishes, seriously injure and sometimes almost destroy the sight. Hawkee' Crystalized Lenses are the most perfect glasses in the world, being especially adapted for the preservation and sometimes restoration of the sight. All eyes fitted and the nt guaranteed at the drug store of F. S. Duffy, New Berne. juno lm Sidewalks. ' Editor Journal: New Berne, North Carolina was first settled in the year 1711, one hundred and seventr-siz years ago, aud in all the time that has elapsed since then, there has not been two hun dred consecutive yards of nrst-class sidewalks constructed in the entire city. We honestly think that we have the most sidewalks of any town of like size in the United States. There are bould ers of stone sticking up several ioches in soma of them, and roots of trees four inches high running across tbem, and loose stone and brickbats laying in the streets and on the sidewalks to bal last one of the Clyde steamers. We will say nothing of the great quantity of loose paper blowing about the streets. If we expect strangers to sojourn among us, our city counoilmen must attend strictly to the condition of the side walks. We 'earnestly appeal to tbem to attend to this matter. Let them now order the weeds to be pulled op before they seed, not to out .them down, as they will spring up again from the roots. We suggest also that they either have the boulders in the sidewalks taken up or mauled in the earth. As for th $ideuxtik on Middle street, we tnu say notntng, leaving tnat swject to an abler pen. X. Cincinnati (Jakttk A ifii of Terror. Lkxinuton, June 2a. Information just received in Lexington, Ky., from a reliable source, says a terrible state of affairs exists in Morehead, ltowan county seat. The friends of the mur dered Martin and of the butchered Logan boys who lived in the upper edge of tho county and also in the ad joining county, have formed themselves into a band of regulators, and propose to wreak summary venKence on Craig Tolliver and his blood-thirsty hench men. Tollivtr has received several notes warning him that the town of Morehead would be burned and the people slaughtered. Consequently every citi zen in Morehead goes armed, and sleeps on his arms at night. The women scarcely sleep at all. fearing the coming of the mob. Last Friday night was set to burn the town, but the pla.e was guarded so well that the attempt, though made, was abandoned. An in tense feeling of insecurity prevails. Business ia entirely abandoned, and a fresh and bloody outbreak may be ex pected at any time. John Belliter and James Frakes, liv ing in the eastern part of Flemming county, near the Rowan county line. bought farms there lately. On yester day they were set upon by a gang of outlaws supposed to be Tolliver s friends. Belliter and Frakes were told to leave and they did so, abandoning their crops. From all reports there is a general etate of terrorizalion through out Rowan. The county officials are controlled by Tolliver guns. Hood citi zens are moving aw.iy and druntefn crowds swfep overtlv county at their own 8 woe' wi!'. Excitement In Ta. Great excitement lias been caused in the vicinity of Paris, Texas, by the re markable recovery of Mr. J. E. Corley, who was solielp'e'B hecouldnot turn in bed, or raise bis head; every body said he was dyirg of Consumption. A trial bottle of Dr King's New Discovery was sent him. Finding relief, he bought a large bottle and a box of Dr. King's New Life Pills; by the time he (had taken two boxes of pills and two bottles of the Discovery, he was well snd had gained in flesh tbirty-six pounds.
