Pamlico Items. The weather baa been very unfavor able for harvesting grain. Too much rain. Mr. Willie Sandford, wife and child of your city, are at Pamlico visiting relatives and friends. We learn that a negro boy was re cently drowned while attempting to swim across a prong of Smith creek. Mr. James M. Caroon of this place, and Messrs. Psul C. Paris aDd Thos. Uadder of Smith creak, have each had a child to pass to the realms of the blest. Mr. T. F. Woodard, a highly respected citizen and clever gentleman, departed this life at his residence on Brown s creak, on the 23d at 1 o'clock p. m. The deceased had been suffering for several months with dropsy. lie was forty-eight years of sge, and leaves a large family and many friends to mourn his loss. We will announce that there will be a grand pio nic given by the Sunday School of Trent Creek at that place on Saturday the second of July . The com mittee of arrangements are diligently at work raising funds for the purpose of supplying the large crowd whioh is expected to be present with ics lemon ade aa well as a magnificent dinner. Mr. R. D. McCotter of our vicinity, has promised to be present and address the school on that occasion. All who go may expect a rare treat. Better Sidewalks Wanted. Editor Jockrax If tbe brick side walks on Hiddle street, from Meadows' corner down, were taken np and new ones substituted made of the same ma terial used by the Presidnetof the A. & N. C. Road in front of the railroad office, it would be a very great im provement. We are satisfied that ar rangements ooold, be mad with Presi dent Bryan to have material brought here at very low figures. The sidewalk on Hancock street from Teiser'f corner to Johnson street is about as rolling and undulating as Western North Carolina, only on a smaller scale. Fayetteville Newt: The first water melons of the season appeared on our market today. They were raised in this county about one mile and a half from the city. The prices of them ranged from 30 to 50. Wilmington Review: We referred yesterday to the fact that the Wilming ton cotton milla were now manufactur iog seersucker cloth. This is its first departure from the manufacture of prints cloth. In speaking of the latter a gentleman in this city, one of the old est and moat prominent of the dry goods dealers, remarked a day or two ago that "the prints cloth made by the Wilmington cotton mills is the best in tbe United States and is really the only 64 cloth made. " Charlotte ChronuU Mr. S. B. Tan ner has returned from Iowell, Mass.. where he purchased an equipment of machinery for ths new plaid mills to be located at High Shoals. The machinery purchased is of the best patterns, and the mills will be splendidly equipped We are glad to see our friend Dick Stewart back from an extended trip through California. C, was opened lo the public on Tuesday whh appropriate celebration and its cuisine, under the management of its accomplished French cook, was wonderfully appetizing. The Messrs. Patterson have inaugurated a new de parture in hotelism, not only m New Berne but in North Carolina. The Journal aays "It is a oosey, neat, well fitted up hotel, and a credit lo New Berne. " A good hotel is the first requi site to a live town and a poor hotel is a "millstone hanged about its neck," and tbe citizens of New Berne should and doubtless do appreciate this enterprise of the Pattersons We rejoice with the venerable but progressive old town in this new aid lo its prosperity Wide Awake. June 2U.The most violent earthquake experienced here since 18.r8 occurred at 6 20 this morning, causing great alarm among the population. The shock lasted two minutes and twenty seconds, and the direction of the movement was from northeast to southwest. All of the clocks in the city were stopped, several buildings were demolished and others were badly damaged. So far as report ed no person waa injured. At II o '. luck this morning two distinct re ports were heard aud a severe shock was felt all over the city. Buildings were shaken and the inmateH badly frightened. The fire, w hich began inside the jail, is supposed to havu been started by two colored prisoners so that they might regain their liberty. ine of the imprisoned men. named Oeorge Washington, was burned to death, and the other one re ceived injuries of a fatal character. Sliobaand Killed his Wire. AbiiKvii.i.K, N. C, June 29 Tom King, colored, shot and killed his wife this morning at hiB home near the city. He was arrested and is now in iail aw aiting inquest. Tbe prisoner claims the shooting was accidental. There is no witness to the shooting except tbe husband. The shooting was probably accidental. Albert Victor Reviews the Troops. Dublin, June 28. Prince Albert Vici tor reviewed tbe troops in Phoenix Park and afterwards reviewed the marines,' He held a reception later in tbe day which was attended by all classes.
