The season is at band when 'the

The miscbief U efteVrJone Ion be
fore thejeffect appearlJIParanUaay,
when tuay are aanaed t give their
children plain and simple food, and
to deny them stimulating dnnts
like tea and coffee: 'Oh, nothing
harts m children; I let then oars
whaterer is off the tabie." In the
ooo$nontha this may seem to be the
ease. Boys staff themselves with
indigestible food day - after, day
without showing any signs of being
lojarea, ana then in the dog-days
suddenly collapse without any
special caiise.
It is with children as It la with
as, their elders; the paniahment ot
their exTors is often long ' delayed.
They weacen thetr digestion in .the
winter and die of it in August.
The time to regulate the diet oi the
yoong is all the time. Physicians
.who praetioe in the populous parts
'of cities have often remarked thar
the mortality is greatest last when
most .precautions are taken, and
when the children themselves are
afraid to eat improper things.
They have been wrongly fed for
eleven mopths; their digestive ap
paratus baajbeen daily overwrought;
its reserve of force is all expended.
Then comes a long hot term, and
we are appalled by the news of
hundreds of deaths a day among
tbe children of a few wards.

Late Summer Crops.
In addition to peas tberejare a few
other crops whose planting may
still eoMinne, success being depen
dent more upon seasons. It should
be remembered that late-planted
crops require rich soil and - deep
preparation. Forage crops of corn,
millet, sorghnm, etc., may 6 till -De
made, but will not amount to much
without good ground, good prepara
tion and reasonable seasons. If
such plantings be made and the
plants started off in; July, the
August rains are frequently suf
ficient to mature fine yields.' We
have had fine success with tt-tail
millet sown even so late as August
1st The best potatoes for keeping,
as well as for planting next epring
are. made from nces set out in
well-plowed, good soil throughout
the month ol Jnly, those planted
early in the month often making
as large tubers as may be desired,
and tbe later, sufficiently, large- for
ordinary use and for seed. There
is no doubt of the last that the later
plantings produce better keepers,
and they are much cheaper, as
they make with much less labor.
Plantings of cuttings on wheat,
barley or rye lots are almost certain
ot a good yield of smooth, fair-sized
no to toes at very small expense of
labor. Very late plantings should
be in closer rows and tbe beds not
thrown np so high. Southern Cul
