Literary. Among American literary produc tions few possess that higli standard of excellence which the New York Ledger has attained. The variety of its con tents, classification of its make up, neat ness of print, and being entirely free from advertisements, are some of the maDy strong points with the Ledger. Once you become a reader of it, there in a great desire to remain so. In the Forum for August. Lord Hrarn well, one of llie foremost jurist of Eng land, has an article in which ho has en deavored to tell that the issues between Ireland and the English government has never been fairly stated in this country. Evi n in the Cnited Stalls this question absolves much interest Ireland has long felt I hat she was sorely oppressed by English rule, and will, when tho opportunity oilers itself, make a desperate struggle to free hersrlf from the British yoke of bondage. Ono of the famous historical novels that is woith reading, and haa the quality of thrilling, almost etrancing, interest, as well as merit, is Zenobiu or the Full of Palmyra, by William Ware. It is one of those choice books whose popular circulation has been heretofore prevented by copyright-monoply, being the work of an American author, and having fallen unfortunately, into the hands of publishers who either lacked the faculty or the enterprise to give it to the people. Copyright having ex pired Alden the Literary Revolution publisher takes it up and prints a first edition of 100,000 copies of the opening chapters, and reduces the price from $1.50 to 10 cents for the complete story, in good type and excellent form. Palmyra, (called also Tadmor in the OJd Testament) one of the most mag nificent of oriental cities, founded by King Solomon, under its last and most famous queen, Zsnobia, undertook to dispute with Rome, under the great Anrelian, for the mastery of the world. The queen was celebrated alike for beauty, for learning and for courage. Tbe scenes, the characters and the his- torical events, are finely selected, and abound with striking images and as sociations. What Trne Merit TTIU Do. The unprecedented sale of Bischee's German Syrup within a few years, has astonished tbe world. It is without doubt the safest and best remedy ever discovered for the speedy and effectual core of Coughs, Colds, and the severest Lung troubles. It acts on an entirely different principle from the usual pre scriptions given by Physicians, as it does not dry p a Cough and leave the disease still in the system, but on the contrary removes die cause of the trou ble, heals the parts affected and leaves them in a purely healthy condition. A bottle kept in the house for use when the diseases make their appearance, will save doctor's bills and a long spell of serious illness. A, trial will convince you of these facts. Hy IL' o'clock we reached the loveliest little, park that I have ever seen, upread out in all of nature s adornments, the trees looking more like a neglected orchard than the w ilds of a mountain slope. The green carpet of luxuriant ferns led us lo believe that we were in the vicinity of tho celebrated M KM 111 II. I 'S M'HIN ' i A short detour to the right proved th.s to be so, and in a deep jravine all cur tained around with i hodoiUndrons. 'jUlfllv rippling flolii the hill hide, we found the coolest, c lea i est . and withal the best tasted water 1 ever drank. The temperature was as low as any ice water. A glass tilled with it would condense an freely as if it piece of n e was in it. Here we opened our liuyi i sack and took our noon day lunch At l'J Owe again shouldered kna; sacks in I slarted for I UK I'lNNA' hi:, the next point of interest in our j til m y Winding around this sharp cut and then around that. w dually capped tho climax, and stood with our hands upon the slalT w Inch denotes the high est part of the Him' Itnlge Mountains, and which is put down in the hooks al live thousand feet above the level of tlie sea. Hero we had a full view i f the railroad as it m underod along, could look right into one of the tunnels m ar Mud creek, and see distinctly tho via duct near Hound Knob, and discover, partially hid by surrounding trees, the hotel. It is 2.1M o'clock, and wo heard the engine whistle and know that the east-bound tram is thero for dinner, so hy waiting thirty minutes wo can see the cars pass across the viaduct, and as we fancy time is abundant we deter mine to wait and do so. Those thirty minutes were nioro important than we had supposed, and would hive boon of priceloss value to us later in tho j iur ney . We have seen the train pan-, plneked a few souvenirs from the shrubbery, and turn our course downward to take the route to the nert great point of in terest Mrrciir.i.i.'s teak The descent was not so steep upon this side because it only let us down to a step leading to another mountain, "Po tato Top." The scenery here was en chanting, such rich beds of ferns and other growth are seldom seen ; but we move on with only occasional glances at the surroundings for we are getting thirsty and want to reach the cool spring which hangs out just below the Peak of Mount Mitchell. A thunder storm has been juet below us and a very slight shower came down upon us, but none to hurt. The walk ing has already degenerated from a Cisure trip to the determined step of iness. We must reach tbe peak to see tbe sun set and we must reach tbe spring to get tbe son wet for we are very "dry." The Potato-topis finally crossed and we now begin tbe struggle up MounMlitchell. The clouds have cleared awty and promise an enchant ing scene from the top if we are there in time. Aspirations are high, respira tions quick and excited, and perspira tion copious and wilting. It begins to require a keen perception of the ludi crous to see any fun in the walk we have undertaken, but haying laid our hands to the plow, we con not turn back if we would. A cloud envelops the western horizon and bur sunset view is foreclosed but our thirst forfhe cooling drought from that spring is quite as urgent for us to go up as ever.
