The steamer Margie is advertised on an excursion to Ocraooke to leave here at 7 o'clock next Saturday morning. Prayer meeting of the Second Ad Ventist will be held this u i n t; at s o'clock at their hall "ii S.mili Inn street near Metcalf. The Academy Green has not an at tractive appearance at all now. The grass and weeds have grown up which trive it a deserted look. The large double store on Pollock street being tilted up by Mr. John Dunn for bis immense stock of confection eries novelties, c, is neurniK comple tion. In Bpite of the spriukltH thai fell a', intervals through the urealer portion of yesterday , the mercury was forced up to Wr where it remained until late in the reding. A, W. Gordon and wife, evanm-lints of the Second Advent faith, of New Hampshire, will hold services at the Mechanics Engine House on Hancock street this evening. Work on Federel and Church allies has wonderfully improved them. From a dirty, filthy and disease-breeding pass way, they have been changed to a clean, even and healthy appearance. The annual eseursion of Hollow-ell & Petersons passed through the city yester day afternoon on the way to Morehead A large crowd was along, though not us many as usually go on these trips. The Bteamer Elm Cily with nil her appurtenances, tackle, &c, was sold ul auction by virluo of a decree of the United States Cireuit Court yesterday. B. F. Clyde was the purchaser at 5 COO. It would not only look better but would prevent pedestrians having their haU k nocked Jo ir and to lower their um brellas if some of the overhanging limbs on the west Bideof Hancock Mreet between Neuse and Broad were cut off. Tbey are in the way and look had to he on one of our principal streets. Steamer Movements. The Bteamer Vesper of tho E.C.D. line will sail at 4 o'clock tins afternoon. Steamer Blanche left yesterday for Kinston. Steamer Trent leaves at C o'clock this morning for Trenton. Steamer Margie returned from the ex cursion to Portsmouth Monday, and will leave this morning for Bayboro. On The Line of Promotion. We heard one of our neighbors a short time ago called the hallelujah Tinker, and since then we have seen him addressed as sanitary engineer and plumber, but he wishes it to be known thai be is not working for promotion, but that he is only old man Dan, the tin and sheet iron workman who is do ing bis level best to keep in the middle of the road. Beat Again. Our New Berne nine returned from Kinston . last night. As the city was ' unusually quiet last night, and none of the boys reported the result to the Jour- , HAL, we take it for granted that the game was a draw or not played. A friend, however, says the fame. was played and the New Eernes were baaten. We have warned the boys Mteral times that they were dealing with no trash when they challenged the Kinston boys. We know something of Jhem. ... . - -v.. , ; Ksw Steamboat for New Berne. - Tha Old Dominion Steamship Co. of New York "his contracted with a Wil ; ; injrton (Del.) firm for the construction vof an iron hull screw propeller steamer "for both passMgen and freight, to ply between here and Norfolk. The details of the proceedings would not interest our readers, so w e will only rpeak of the leading features. The address of Presi dent McKee is very favorably spoken of by the members. The concert given by the citizens of the tow n on Wednesday evening, complimentary to the associa tion, was verv much enjoyed On Thursday morning horses and vehicles were furnished the members to visit the Ilnilstori gold mines, eight or ten miles from town. Most of the members accepted the ini tation and had a delightful trip, but we were satisfied with the situation and preferred remaining in town : day. Learning that Judge Povlwn vviih hold rug court v. e sought the way to the Court room, where we found Solicitor Bower engaged, not in prosecuting himself for play Ing polka, but in prose cultrg a poor wretch for murder. The prisoner v, a- a wh.le man and was a stranger in tin' community where he cornmiltiil the murder. U) tho bi rich, by the Mile of Judge Itoykin.sal Judge I.unikni' of the circuit court of Ca., who m i-pi -ruling the summer in this lovely mountain country. Iln pud Judge Hoykin a high compliment for his methods in dispatching business and impartial rulings. The presence of these two judges from different States led us to inquire into the work and pay of oach and we soon ascertained that Georgia was much moro liberal and just to bf r judicial officers than North Carolina. Judge Lumkins worked twenty weeks last year and the attorneys made up all cases for tho supreme court. Ilis salary is two thousand dol lars per annum. Judge Bay kin worked, in the same year, forty two weeks and of ten had to work until midnight making up cases for the supreme court, and bis salary is but twenty-five hundred dollars. Looking around the court room, we were struck with the great difference in the audience and that which as sembles in our court room. There was but one colored man in the room there was a large crowd and he was Btuck in one corner. If the color line should be drawn here in politices it would bo as one-sided as James City. At the afternoon session of the As sociation a paper was read by the His toriographer, Jordan Stone, Esq., in which be paid an eloquent tribnte to the late Peter If. Hale. There waa also a suggestion made, and a practical one, we think, as to how to secure funds for the erection of a monument to the memory of kr. Hale, We hope it mar be carried into execution. A resolu tion was adopted commending the ef forts of thetShot welT, Memorial Associa tion and promising to aid in the good work. ' A committee which had been appointed to consider the propriety of adopting tinif orA- ratee of advertising, baaed apon circulation, reported favor ably npon the proposition.
