Two cases berole the Mayer yenter day. One for disordeily conduct was fined onedollar and cost. One for block ading sidewalk was discharged upon pay ment of cost. We are infc rmtd that Mr. John (li ulin and his wife who live near Cowpen Landing, this county, were horrified last Monday morning when they woke up and discovered that their six months old baby was dead in bed with them The supposition is that it was arci dentally smothered. Ws are pained to learn of a serious aooident that occurred to Mrs. Charles Jnkins'living on the Hurwell Canady plaoe 8 or 10 miles east of Kinstoh. She attempted to light the fire in a stove with kerosene when it Ignited with the oil in the can, causing an explosion whereby she was seriously burned. Dr. Woods rendernd medical assistance. Fire. Dennison put on tho first stream. The damage was only slight. Resigned. Our townsman. Dr. E. II. Meadows, has resigned the position of President of the North Carolina State Board of Pharmacy, to take charge of the labor atory of the Meadows' Fertilizer Co. He has held the position, satisfactory to all concerned, for six years, and we are glad to know that a new enterprise of our city demands" his services. Excursion to Morehead City. The train which carries the colored excursion to Morehead, City next Sun day will have a car attached for white people only. All who desire to go can do so by purchasing tickets at the rail road office. Fare for the round trip 75 ceais. Personal. Mr. L. B. Cutler's family are off to Morehead for the summer. Mr. J, J.Disoswsy the efficient and polite agent of the Neuse ft Trent River Steamboat Co., returned from a trip to New- York last night. His Bennie Bishop has returned from a trip to Washington, D, C. Mr. Fred. Mitchell, formerly of New Berne, passed down for Morehead City Ust night. We Kurt Havs Them. The Annie of this line will be in this morning. Our Machine Shops. The machine shops of New Berne have lately gone into new hands and the fa cilities for securing first-class work now are greatly improved. We noticed a few days ag, the new firm of Willis. Edwards &. Co., which ha just opened at the shops occupied by the late E. (1. Cuthbert. We now wish to call atten tion to the firm of Crabtree & Co., at the brick building ou Craven street, the old stand of Man well Crabtree. Messrs. J. 11. Crabtree and Basil Man ly constitute the firm. Tbey are both master machinist with considerable ex perience; have added mew machinery to the shops, and are prepared to do work in nrst-class style. They have just completed the machinery for the steamei Howard and are now engaged in overhauling the machinery of the Bay River Lumber Co. 's mill. Tbey employ thirteen hands, are thoroughly reliable and do work promptly when brought in. Now is the tune to put engines and other machinery in order for ginning cotton and New Berne is the place to have the work done. The Farms rs' Exc ursion. The farmers of Jones county will have an excursion from Trenton to Riverdalg in ibis county mi the 4ih of August. I lie steamer t rent will have Trenton at 7 a m. , and the K inst'in will join her lit II1ih1,hvi1Iu and both leave that point at 10 a in. Fare from Trenton 50 cents, from l'olloksvllle 40 cents. Children under twelve years half price This will be a delightful trip for the farmers and their families and we ex pect to Bee a large crowd. They will stop at New Heme going and coming and will have dinner at Riverdale. We think Col. Polk aught to come down. We see he is to be in Wayne county on the gd of August and if he could get to Ooldsboro in time to take the evening: train he could be here in time to join the excursion. The gentle men in charge of the excursion would doubtless have invited him had they known that he would be in this section of the State. He is engaged in trying to organize the farmers and is publish ing a first-class farmers journal. We think it will be to his interest and enter taining to the farmers who will be there to be present at this meeting. He Got the Cigar. A prominent young lawyer from one of our eastern counties was in attend ance on the Press Association at Iien- dersouvllle. On the evening before he left, while sitting on the piazza at the hotel in company with friends, the commercial tourist or me house ap proached him, when the following con versation took plaoe: Tourist: "I knew you were one of the smartest lawyers in your country as soon as I looked in your face. You ought to have some big office." Friend: "lie will likely be the candi date for Congress in the first district next year. " Tourist: "I knowed so; knowed it as soon as I looked at him. Now you jest do the talking and I will come down and do the outside work." Lawyer: "I am very much obliged to you." tourist: iiaven t you got a cigar that you can give a fellow?" Lawyer: "Look in my vest pocket hanging up there and you will find one." Tourist obeyed, found the cigar and said: "Now hayen't you got a little drap you can give a fellow? Bender sonville is a dry town." Lawyer: ' Not a drap." ARRIVALS AT HOTEL ALBERT, J. A. Eiggs, Sherwood Higgs, Balto; David Cannady, Onslow Co.; Wm B. Blades, J. W. Latham, E. B. Roberts, J. F. I' NLi KNUh We closed our muuication after July ii. 1S7. last com bearing the traiu whistle jjr-t ovrr the hills. We ere u u Liecebehi lly hhHy as we learned afterwards that one could write a lellrr after the train whistled in time for the mail. It Uses fourteen minutes f roin the time of this signal to reach K lund Knob, the train coming in view twi.e and within a few hundred yards of the hotel before an it io and tbeu stopoiDK twenty minutes for din ner. We expected to be on our way home before writing uain. tut this at tractive place, the agreeaMr tjuin uow stopping here and the cler treatment of the proprietor, luduted ue to stay oyer another day The gentlemen of the prrnf of Aehe ville who by the way are dieplajing as much vigor in building up their city as any other business men, having invited the members of the press association to spend a day in the city, we stopped over on our return from liot Springs- ami took quarters at Battery Park. After dinner horses and carriages were fur nished and we were driven to points of interest about the city. It w as our luck to get a seat with Mayor Harkins, two hundred and fifty pounds of mountain Republicanism, whom we found to lie a vry clever, enterprising gentleman. We learned from him that in enterprises looking to the building up and improve J ment of the city , politics were left in tin back ground and all hands pulled to gether. This is as it should be. Nn town or city can move forward if poli tics are allowed to rule in the promulga tion of new enterprises. Ashcvilli is trulv on a boom. Walerw 01 ki arc he iDg put in that will cost one bundled and twenty live thousand dollars. The supply is brought from the SwaiiDanoa river five miles from the city and emp ties into a stand pipe which holds seven hundred and fifty thousand Kli""1B This stand-pipe is placed m ar the oot of Beaucatcher mountain and the water is distributed from it by pipes running to different portions of the city. The foundation of a large cotton factory has been laid and the work is being rapidly pushed forward, real estate is com manding almost fabulous prices, and the boom in this line continues. Mayor Harkins pointed out to us a lot of two or three acres which sold a few years auo for five hundred dollars, a few months ago it sold for twelve thousand dollars and the owner is now ottered sixteen thousand, but asks twenty and will probably get it in a short time. We he lieve it is generally conceded that the building of Battery Park hotel gave the city tho biggest boom it has had. It is situated on the highest point within the city limits, anil is at once the most prominent object from the sui rounding hills and mountains'. After several houre drive to points of interest around the city our party by a singular accident, as it seemed, met upon a hill near the French liroad river whero refreshments were served and a speech of welcome delivered by Hon. Tho9. D. Johnston which was re sponded to by President Eld ridge of the Association. This closed the pro gram for the day and we sought Pat ters Park where we got a good night's rest. Here we met Mr. E. H. West, a Lenoir county man; how cheering it is when among strangers to meet one from old home I We were beginning to feel that we had been from New Berne a month, having seen no Journal for several days and no one from that sec tion. Oa Saturday morning, howavsr, we met Mr. W. F. Rountree, Capt Dan Roberts and Dr. F. W, Hancock, and the presence of these gentlemen made Asheyille seem more like New Berne. We wish them and the ladies who are with them a pleasant stay in the mountain metropolis, Daring our stay in the mountains we have heard very little of politics. But we have heard enough to know that the Democrats are much interested in Rich mond Pearson's movements. The true and stout hearted of the party are in favor ef striking square from the shoulder and make him show bis hand either as a Democrat or Republican. Others of the weak-kneed class are in favor of conciliation and would even make concessions to Mr. Pearson in order to have him puil in the Demo cratic traces. Senator Kope Elias is by no means idle. He has been address ing large crowds in his district, giving an account of his stewardship as the representative in the Senate. He doesn't propose to take np the time of the important campaign nextyear to ex plain theee matters, so he disposes of them while they are fresh in his memo ry. He is a true Democrat, has a large heart, and if he should be the nominee for Lieut. Governor, on the Democratic tibket, the Hahn Republicans of Craven ought to give him a rousing vote, for it was WisreechtbM followed Hon. Year by year New Heme is losing her importance as the .1111merc ial center of the surrounding counties. It is not because these good people, w ho have left us to do their buying and sell ing with strangers, do not like uu, but because wo have negUcted them, ne glected them not only in matters of transportation but) of supply as well. We are often confronted with the hu miliating fact of our own townsmen going to Kinston or (ioldsboro to buy their horses, and to tho town of Wash ington for their now buggies. This was chiefly beforo Stewart and Randolph came; tbey will, it is hoped and be lieved, put an end to th 1. Hut this is a digression. Whatever theorist may hope for New Berne, to the practical mind for the present, and for aught that appears for a long time to come, its future depends upon the country which surrounds it. If that groves and she retains her hold upon its traffic she will grow; if that falls off or goes backward, so will she. Let us then assist the people who live in that country to improve their condi tion; to enlarge their operations and increase their population by giving them cheaper, quicker and better trans portation for their abundant piolucts. Above all, given more energy, enter prise and unity in all that tends to our upbuilding and less bickerings and jealousies, we will begin to reap the reward of our natural advantage of lo cation. By unity we do not mean blind acquiescence, but that co-opera tion which suggests defects as well as experience; which criticises as well as approves, but which is always inspired by an earnest desire to aid in correct ing deficiencies and in producing con ditions which may secure the ultiaiate success of that which is conceded to be beneficial to the community. 8.
