Mr Havens elated that he thought N -rll Carolina had every reaei li to be ( roud of her political leaders, that he could not mention the name of one w ho wus not well filled for olilical leaderelu Kxked him what he thought of Senator Vance, he replied in woiJs near as we cau remember, as followi" "I think SeDator Vance is the most B-jtraordinarv man that has been bnrn and reared iu North Carolina in my day and generation. When he first entered political life I was a resident of another Stale, and knew but little of him. After my return to North Carolina I heard much of him. In conversation with the late genial, whole souled and talented Major Thomas Sparrow of Washington, this Slate, he told me that 7.-h. N ance, as be railed lnm. w as tbegrratei-t man of his aue in the Male . that l:e n in telle, dually a giant, and would int. ally be the leading man of the Sta'.e, an I rank with the great nu n of the I'niti I Slates. Sparrow, lle uh be never i-poke ill of any one, w ai i-low in bestow ing praise, unit prai-e was due I asked Sparrow in w bat ouali ties of mind did Mr. Vance so much excel his reply was: 'He seems to me thai he excels in everything, w hi ther at Ihe bar or on the stump or in leyiH lative halls lie is a graceful and forci ble writer and an elegant conversation alist.' This conversation never passed entirely fiom my iniiid. 1 have often thought of it. and once since reminded Sparrow of it. Ho said "Haven't my prophecies turned out true, and let rue tell you, Havens, that it needed no seer to predict N ance's great future; and the end is not yet." When the war clouds that had so long hovered ovur the South burst forth in their furv, then Vance loomed up to the eyes of the people of North Carolina, and I fully realized all that Sparrow had said of him. He seems to me to be instinctively a leader, l'arton in his life of (leneral Jackson says that he, Jackson, was a born leader of men, that if a company of emigrants was suddenly attacked by Indians, and Jackson was among them, that lie would instantly assume thr command and would be readily obeyed. Vance appears to me 10 oe juhi such n num. luring the war while occupying the then very undesirable pomi n of linv ernor of the Slate, to him all ev es w ere turned, tho people and the army looked to him, and fully and implicitly trusted him and nobly did he respond, our troops were heller clothed and better fed than these of any Southern State. He has so thoroughly identified himself with the entire State, that though a western man, he seems to me to belong to Craven county, and bis name is a household word throughout the length and breadth of the State. No man since the days of the great GaBton, has occu pied as great a share of public atten tion, not only in his own State but also in other States, and none whom the people so delight to honor. lie has been accused of a great fondness for the office of United States Senator. I should think he was, who would notbeV I, myself, would like to be a United States Senator, and there is a quarter of a million of men in North Carolina just like me; and let me tell you that Vance has no successor as Senator until removed by death. Politicians and wire pullers may lay their plans to get a successor for him. To these we say in the lan guage of the poet Burns, The beet laid plans of mice and men gang aft aglee. I cannot say that I bave any acquain tance with Senator Vance; I saw him the first time at Tarboro daring the war, and was introduced to him by Mr. ChurchM Perkins of Pitt oounty, from that day to this I hare nerer been in his presence, bat I have followed him sinoe then through his entire political life, and I would not have him undo or unsay anything, politically speaking, that he has done or said. All I regret in his whole career is, that he was not a Democrat earlier in life, bat I can overlook that, as he is now aa good a Democrat as any mm in the State." - This was about the sum nd substance of Kr. He leaves a wife and six children. one of whom resides in Miss, He seemed to be conscious almost up to the very moment he died. A good man has died a worthy Christian has gone home. He had been a consistent member of tbe Methodist Church for a great many years. We mourn the heavy loss, bo t our loss is bis gain.
