R. had a little accident on Thursday night, when about nine or ten miles below Kineton, by a cow run ning upon the track just in front of the engine. Of course there had to be a collision unless one or the other cleared the track and as it was not convenient for the engine to do so, and the cow claimed the right of way the collision had to come and the result tt that both got off the track, the to -tver to return again and the engine to be de layed several hours. The engine, tender baggage and express cur and the second class cur all jumped th track, and , said a gentleman w ho wad a passenger, but for the great coolntsa and good judgment of the engineer, there is no telling what would have be come of us. One of the firemen, as soon as he saw the cow had succeeded in throwing the engine from the track, spread himself out like a bat and lighted upon the ground. The other fireman watched, with a view of following, how ibis one would light, but before he could spread his wings the engineer had put on the brakes and brought things to a hull. No one w as hurt, but the train w as delayed four or five hours. It being known that the train left Kinston on time, after wailing an hour end a half after due here the train dispatcher, Mr, Webb, ordered out a special to go iu search of it. They found it j ist below Dover and took the passengers, express and mail and arrived about twelve o'clock. A force was immediately Bent up and a track laid around the wreck so there was no delay on the west hound train yesterday morning. liy evening the wreck was cleared from the main track and brought to tin' city, lint little damage was sustained by the en gine or cars. The passengers think they were for tunate that it did not turn out a serious accident. They were also forcibly re minded of the old adage, "it s an ill wind that blows nobody tjood,'' as the porter of the l'ulman car found an op portunity to dispose of his sardines and light bread at fabulous prices. Mr. J. II. Gilpin, traveling agent for the wvll- known house of R. O. Dun & Co., says he has never known a corner made on sardines and bread before at the expense of a few hungry passengers who could not help themselves. We believe this is the first accident that lias occurred on the road in a year, and this only caused a few hours de lay. The Wilmington and Onslow Road. In a few days the people of Wilming ton will vote upon a proposition to sub scribe ono hundrod thousand dollars to build a railroad from that city into Onslow county. The well infornitd editor of the Star says the proposition will be adopted by u good majority. But whether it passes or not, the ac tivity and pal of tbo intelligent and progressive business men of that city in this behalf Bhows clearly their estimate of the importance of this road to their city. It is evidently not the country be tween Wilmington and Onslow they wish to reach. That is, it is said, in the main poor and susceptible of but little development. It is the large and grow ing trade of Onslow they so much do sire and love. Tbey now havo say about one third of this business, but they want it all. Tho construction of thiB road will secure it 'p thorn except perhapa a small strip along the White oak river. They know tho value of what they would gain and they know too the slender tenure by which they now hold what they already have. They are far too wise not to see that a short road of thirty-five miles run out from New Berne would wrench from them this coveted prize, and to make sure of it they propose to build a line about fifty miles, burden themselves with a debt of one hundred thousand dollars and an annual tax of six thousand dollars to pay the interest. All this notwithstanding they now have a heavy bonded debt. Nobody thinks of asking the city of New Berne for anything to aid in the projected road from here; there is no provision for it in the charter even were it desired. But there are many who regret President Bryan, being the con trolling power, did not give more con sideration to this scheme when brought to the attention of the stockholders at their late meeting. We hope to see a fime when the authorities of the Atlan tic road will take a more liberal view of this matter of branch roads. Money judiciously invested in them will pay much more than interest upon the bonds. Does anybody suppose the wide-awake business men of Wilming ton hare gone into the Onslow Railroad business blindly. . If so they are mis taken. They haye calculated welL They say to themselves; What is a tax of tix thousand dollars a year to tie trde of a whole county'f Why, we shall illkke iimriv nmeK lrtkt sum out of . , . , ' it. But the truth is. they have no idea i oievcr having io pay the principal or. much of the interest upon theee bonds' ! They believe, not v ilhout reason , that the load will pay. j W.ll, as Craven. Ware did so, but fate tent him back to Georgia instead of to North Carolina, and he forgot his first love. He married a young lady of this place, who died about six months ago. The paper con taining her death notice fell into the handsof a lady in Atlanta who knew of the North . Carolina romance.
