It contains good and wholesome logic and is well worthy of consideration . It is headed "Temptation.'' We copy today a communication from the Wilmington Star on the East Caro lina Land and Railway Co. The w riter is endeavoring to show the importance of building a road from Wilmington and to show the necestity of voting the one hundred thousand dollars. A gentleman from a sister town was passing down Pollock street to Fowler's ferry a few days ago and when passing Copt. Oaksmith's residence on the cor ner of East Front and Pollock streets, remarked, after carefully viewing the north front, that "it is the lin?pt jnl in the State." Maj. Dennison has put in an oil refin ery at his cotton seed oil mill, and is now turning out a No. 1 article of oil whioh is used in cooking. This enter prise will keep many thousands of dol lars in New Berne as the cost of refin ing is considerable. The oil as it goes from here now is ready for use. New Berne needs a few more Maj Danniaons with plenty of capital. Some young men on a spree night be fore last "had some fun" by trying to fill up the cellar at the corner of Pollock and Craven streets with the property of private individuals and the U. S, Gov ernment which they found on Pollock street. The postmaster thinks they ought not to get so drunk as to be un able to distinguish government prop erty. A trial before the U. S. District Court is always costly. Arrivals V Hotel Albert. D 8. Joneip C. E. Stover, M. DeW. Stevenson, H. S, Noon, city, C. C Hin- foB, Petersburg, Va., W, W. Avery Ashevllie, N. C. The Board of IMueationis au thon. d and directed to execute title in fee simple lo the said East Carolina Land nnd Railway Company for one half of tho Whito Oak Swamp, contain ing more than 80,000 acres. To further facilitate the construction of the Baid railroad, tho Commissioners of Jones and Onalow counties are authorized to grant and transfer the highway in their respective counties leading through White Oak swamp. This highway was built several years ago by convict labor and is graded about sufficient for the bed of a railroad. The distance from New river to Trent river over this already graded road is about twenty five miles. The owners of a line of steamboats plying on the Trent river from Trenton to New Berne are among the incorporators of the rail road. They are anxious to build the road berween the rivers. About seventeen years ago some gen tlemen from the city invited Onslow to ask for a county subscription of $25,000 to a road from this place to New river. The subscription was voted by a large majority. The people of Onslow have not yet got a road, but another scheme advocated by Capt. McMillan, of Teachey's. to build a railroad from that place to Jacksonville, was beaded off by the people. The people of Onslow have endured for a long time the want of transporta tion facilities. But it is likely they will soon secure them. If they cannot get a standard gauge line to Wilmington, they will take a narrow gauge line over the Quaker Bridge road to Trent river, thence by steamboat to New Berne and Norfolk. They prefer, for many ' obvi ous reasons, the Wilmington standard gauge, and from what can be learned of their feelings, are again willing to vote t ponent of the Ontlow railroad eubscrip- ; lion, in r r i Jay issue or me Messenger, i gave some estimates of what would come lo s limington over the road.
