Think ing the contents of the cup was cotfee he drank it at one .wallow Since tha. time be has beeu au intense tufferer. Already much interest is being mani fested in yachting circles North. John Roach's Sons, CheBter, Pa., have received the contract to build a mam moth side-wheel steamer for the Old Colony Steamboat Company of New York. The contract price is $1,500,000. The boat will be a counterpart of the Pilgrim, whioh was launched there five years ago. The new Teasel, which will be known as the Puritan, will be 886 feet over all and 87 feet wide over guard line; her depth will be 18 feet 8 inches and from the top of hei dome to the base line will be 60 feet. She will be fitted with 253 staterooms and will haye 200 berths besides. The Pilgrim and Puri tan will be the two largest steamboats afloat. This is the most important con tract that the Roaches have received since the award of the naval vessels, oyer four years ago, and the building of inch an immense vessel will give work to hundreds of mechanics. In creased work at the ship-yard will be of great advantage to Chester, and there is great joy at the news of the contract. Only about 100 men are now employed at the yard. Baltimore San. What True Merit Will Do. The unprecedented sale of Bischee't German Syrup within a few years, has astonished the world. It is without doubt the safest and best remedy ever discovered for the speedy and effectual cure of Coughs, Ceids, and the severest Lung troubles. It acts on an entirely different principle from the usual pre scriptions given by Physicians, as it does not dry np a Cough and leave the disease still in the system, but on the contrary removes the cause of- the trou ble, heals the parte affected and leaves them in a purely healthy oondition. . A bottle kept in the house for use when the diseases make their appearance, will save doctor's bills and a long spell of serious Illness, - A trial will convince yon of these facts. Jarvis. now mini.ter to the court of Brazil: accord ingly we yosterday presented oursulvee at the office of Mr. Frank Myer, w hich is occupied by him during the absence of Mr. Myer. We were politely re ceived and asked lo lake a seat, which we did, and commenced the conversa tion by calling lo h s attention the promise he had made us. We atked him what was hid opinion as regards the relative merits of Jarvis, Vance. Hansom, Merrimon, Latham and Fowle Mr. Havens replied that it was exceed ingly difficult lo institute a comparison of that kind, that menial abilities and characteis differed so greatly that he could nol attempt it, but ihal he would answer my question by relating to me an answer he had received to a similar question he had propounded lo that gifted son of North Carolina, the Hon. U. S. Donnel. We will relate as near as we can Mr. Havens 's w ords. He said "Previous to the lalewar between the Slates, I was sitting in the cilice i f Mr. Donnell in the town of Washington our conversation was upon the political leaders i f the. country knowing that Mr. D.mnel was a great a linirer ! Djnicl Webster. I asked bun Ins.'pir. lon as regards the relative merits of Calhoun and Webster, and win h was the greater man Hu reply was (In I'hn greatest writer thai ever lived since the Christian dispensation, Saint Paul, said in his Kpietlu to ihe form Ihians, "There in out' glory of tho sun another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars, for one star dilfereih from auolher star in glory.' This is all the answer,' Mr. Donnel Baid. I can give to your question . ' The gentlemen mentioned by you, Mr. Nunn, are of un doubted ability, hut I cannot institute a comparison between them, but I will tell you my opinion of (Jov. Thomas J. Jarvis. 1 now entertain a different opinion from the one I had some years Bince. I have written some pretty sharp criticisms upon his olllcial acts, since thun I have seen that I was wrong, that 1 had judged too hastily I came lo this conclusion before Oov Jarvis vacated the gubernatorial chair, from seeing the wonderful effects ol his policy, the results of which were that North Carolina's credit was upon a firm and sure basis the Bchool system was perfected : she rapidly became the cyno sure of all eyes and now stands in the front rank of the great Slates of the I nion. I do not think (iov. Jarvis ib :t genius, hut he is a man of decided tal ents, and he has in a great degree lhat one element of character w hich Thomas Jefferson said Washington so great! v posaeBsed, and which doubtless was the great cause of his eminent success. This element as good judgment. ( iov Jarvis, in modern pnrlance, is what is called an extremely level-headed man his risffl in political life has been phe nomenal; he has filled every position to wbich he has beon called with signal success, whether on the battle-field, in the legislative halLs, or in the guberna torial chair, ayo, even at the court of C Brazil, doubtless at present tho moet important ministerial poet to lbs I'nited States, and one to which this govern ment should pay more attention than to any of the posts in Kurope, possibly with the exception of (ireat Britain and France. One must have talents of a high order to fill these positions with the ability Jarvis has shown. I think he would succeed at anything he made a specialty of. We judge a tree by its fruits, and we judge a man by his suc cess in life. Circumstances threw him into the political arena, and we might say that he has led no other life, for he was comparatively a young man at the close of the war, from which he retired battle-scarred and penniless. No man 1eithout great merit could have attained the exalted position be now occupies. There is a friendliness of demeanor, a simplicity in his style'of manner and conversation that is attractive, I might say magnetic. He has the faculty of making a drys political statement pleas reading. In his messages to the Legis lature there b a something, I cannot describe it, unless it is simplicity of style, that never fails to impress the reader. His style of writing is similar to that of President Grant, but of a higher order; his letters are models of perspecuity and brevity. His abilities are so well recognized throughout the State, that the people, almost with one accord, are anxious for him to take offloe. It seems to me that be can and does get any position he wants, and the people recognize hu ability by giving it to him.-. There is none stich thing is this wuntry among the whites as the fol- lowing blindly political leadership intel- licence is now so general! y diffused that ' such a thing is simply impossible: and! when vou rind a man like (iov.Jarvis, people confide in him and are willing to irust him. and they w ilh l.ke hae fell that I'ialo Dur ham wiy ever titu e be au.i others, blood a w all of lire agaiuBt Ihe mob in Ihe Legislature i f 1)S in iheir ttlorle lo ullage ihe S'.aU .
