Look at the policy of the Wilmington ana Weldou directory. I hey are con elructing short or branch lines every where, tapping every section of the oouu try where wealth is to be found, and making themselves the possessors of every instrumentality for commercial improvement. The same Ihing is true of other railroad institutions in other Slates. To what does Goldsboro owe its prosperity but to railroaded l ying in the embrace of a perfect network of these mighty agencies, it has become Ihe receptacle of a thousand induoemenls to mercantile and commercial develop ments, which It would otherwise never have known. And yet only a few years ago it was a little village without popu lation, means or influence. New Berne must have railroads north and south of her. One of the best counties in the Mate, w ith an intelli gent, industrious and prosperous agri cultural community, and good lauds brought to a high degree of tillage. In s between her and Wilmington. The last legislature granted a broad and liberal charter for thw construction of a road. which would bring the products of that procperoun county to our doors. If Ihul road were built, the time would not bp long before an extension of il would be mads lo the Cape Fear, and lo the north of us steel rails would soon be laid to the Roanoke, giving us the shortest, quickest and most perfect communica tion with the North. If not a dollar of the freight carried along this line were slopped at New Berne, in the increased facilities afforded to our truckers and business men, in the increased popula tion brought to occupy our town w ith their capital, energy and business train ing, and in taking New Berne out of its present comparative. security and placing it like a city upon Ihe hill top, to become the "observed of all ob servers," we Bhould gain in every thing that goes to maks up the prosperity of any community. And why cannot all unite upon an enterprise like this? This road will be built, and that very soon. There are too many w ise, shrewd people in this section to prevent the delay of such an enterprise for any very long lime. But why not grasp the situation at once, take Block, ijive our confidence, en couragement and support to the under taking, and place ourselves upon record for our liberal, public spirit? We Burt" ly are not willing to risk our future upon a present limited railroad re sources. 11 is probably only n question of time SB to the Atlantic road being swept out of our hands. Bidders for this sort of property are covering the land like the locusts 'of Egypt. These roads are a Bafer investment, pay better dividends and better interest where they are properly managed, and of course are eagerly BOUht for by saga cious capitalists. And when the Allan- tic goes, il is clearly on the cards that it may be used againBt the material and commercial future of New Kerne. If it is objected by many citizens, that thoy have not the pecuniary ability to take stock in this enterprise, it may be replied that a comparatively small por oent of the subscription will be called for, and that the privileges of the char ter will furnish facilities for the prose cution of the work. But if it be alto gether impossible to take a monied in terest in ths project, then give it your sympathy, your advocacy and support. Remember, your own individual pros perity is at stake, and possibly the welfare and happiness of your family, neighbors and fellow-citizens. ou may be digging a channel along which a new Pactolua may flow into the city, or your neglect may be the signal of its decline. Personal. Dr. E. W. Ward from Onslow was in the oity yesterday. He says that the crops generally are good and that it is enry in portions of the county that too much rain has fallen. Mrs. J. Apropos.! f Bishop Tuttle s feat in rescuing ;i young lady from drowning, a Schenectady l.N. Y. correspondent relates Ihe following anecdote of the Bishop when ho was one of the Western missionary bishops of the I'. K. Church. The Bishop was in a stago on his way to Montana sonio years ago, and among the paseengors were a lady, a drummer, and a man whom tho paper designated as Mr. Smith. This latter smoked a pipe, much to tho annoyance of the lady. The Bishop asked him to desist, but Smith said he would do as he pleased. Bishop Tuttle said if Smith did not cease smoking by the time the next stage station was passed he would take the pipe from Smith's month. The Bishop did as he had threatened, and Smith howled with rage, ordered the stage stopped, and jumping out called upon Bishop Tuttle to come out and give him satisfaction. Everybody was ignorant of the Bishop's identity except the driver. The Bishop stepped out and mauled Smith with such good effect that he cried for mercy. He did not smoke any more that trip.
