D. line ar rived yesterday evening from Elizabeth City with a full cargo of general mer chandise. Another Suggestion. It has been suggested that the coun ty Hock In the A.&N.C. R. be sold and $he money be used in building a bridge across Neuse river. A bridge or a (re, steam ferry across the Neuse would be worth more to the trad of New Berne than any other local move that could be made. There are some fine lands on the north aide of tbe Neuse that would be brought Into cultivation but for the difficulty in set ting to market. Besidea the trade of Pamlico and a part of Beaufort is being drwa, frops New Berne on aooount of tbe Inconvenience in crossing the river. The people evidently want something done frith that stock. Either reduce the;" debt with 'it or dispose of it in a way that will be beneficial to tbe com munity and county. Church Servicee Today. Baptist Church Rev. Dr. WhitBeld, piaio. National Association Engine ai. Tbe following circular which has been handed us may be of interest to our firemen: On Tuesday, 20th September, ltfc7, there will be held at Atlanta, Ga , a Convention of f ire Chiefs of the United States. At the name time and place there will be an exhibition of tire ap paratus of all descriptions, includ ing the latest improvements and device for fighting fires. Such an opportunity has not before teen offered the people of thu section to investigate the most approved methods of fire protection and will probably uever be of fered again. We therefore feel that we are doing a service to communities interested in the preservation of their property from fire in calling their atten tion to this Convention and the epsor tunity for information presented. Tbe meeting of the convention will be open to all, and special rates will be made to all delegates or visitors to the conven tion by tbe hotels and railroads. All information in reference to special-rale tickets over the railroads may be ob tained by addressing Mr. Henry A Mills, Secretary of National Association of Fire Engineers, care of C, C. , C. $ 1 H R., Cincinnati, Ohio. Iiy order of Executive Committee, Chas. C. Fleminu, Secretary Itemed) for Malaria. Editor Journal Will you please publish the following recipe for tbe cure of Malaria, and ask other paper to copy for the sake of suffering human ity: Take a fresh egg (every morning be fore breakfast) and beat it just aa if you were preparing it for making cakee, grate a little nutmeg into it to kill the taste of the egg, sweeten to suit the taste, and add a glass or a half-pint of fresh milk, stir together and drink it. Repeat every morning, without inter mission, for two weeks and it will cure you. A short walk after drinking the milk and egg will add materially to one s health and give him an appetite for breakfast. KKMAHK8. The above remedy oured me. I have spent hundreds of dollars on the Mala ria, but I f ailad in my attempt to obtain a cure until I used egg and milk. A great many others have been cured, in fat all so far as 1 know, who have tried it. I S. A. Murphy, Darby, Penn. Aug. 22, 1887. Colorow Defiant. Dekver, Col., August 28. Tele grams received here this afternoon from Meeker deny tbe reports of yester day that Colorow is surrounded by militia and desires peace. The Indians are intrenched in the hills and so pro tected by natural fortifloatiens that their dislodgment by all the State mil itia combined will be impossible. Col orow said yesterday that he did not want a "little fight" but he did want a "big fight" and tbey would have it if the troop were not called back. E' In juns no fraid." Capt. Lawson, who was returning to Meeker Wednesday afternoon from Camp Adams with a telegram, was beaded off and chased twenty miles and held by tbe Indians until darkness per mitted his escape. They struok him about dusk at a bridge whioh crossed a creek and fired at him separately wbile chasing him, Captain Lawson returned the fire twice. He reached Meeker early yesterday morning com pletely fatigued. If the fight is avoided until tbe arrival of Governor Adams. the trouble may be amicably settled; but if the Indiana clash before his ar rival war" will probably ensue. Mrs Hiller, aged 65 years, living near Maple Grove, Minn , was thrown into a cistern 12 feet deep, half full of water, by tramps, Wednesday evening, and the house robbed of $170 in cash and $1,350 in certificates of depottite in tbe First National Bank of Minneapolis. She clung to a pipe and was rescued by her eons in an exhausted condition. She was alone in the house. The extradition conferenc e concluded its labors in New York Thursday. It was resolved to formulate the conclu sions of the conference in a bill to be presented to Congress, tbe aim of which will be to obtain a simple and uniform mode of procedure for all the Stales in the extradition of fugitives from justice. The conference will meet strain in Washington wbile Congress is in session. An enthusiastic meeting in favor of commercial union between the United States was held at SbefTord, Quebec, ou Wednesday, at whioh addresses were made by members of the Dominion Parliament and others. The meeting closed with cheers for the (jueen and the President. A letter was read from Erastus Wiman regretting his inability to be present. Other meetings will be held. The Pennsylvania State prohibition convention . at Uarriaburg Thursday nominated Simeon B. Chase, of Boston, for judge of the Supreme Court, and Capt. Dallas C. Irish, of New Castle, for State treasurer. Both weme chosen by acclamation. Before the adjourn ment Chairman Charles S. Wolfe re newed his attack on the Pennsylvania Railroad, the Associated Press, and the press in generally, the last of which, he said, is muzzled by the power of mo nopoly a Cul the whiskey ring. An east-bound Union Pacific express train plunged through a bridge at Sand Creek, Col., Wednesday night. The engine was submerged in the sand and Engineer Masterton killed. The fireman jumped into the river and stuck in the sand. He was taken out unconscious. Baggageman Breedlone was badly in jured by falling trunks. An old Ger man woman rushed out with a lantern and stopped another train approaching ou the Burlingtcn route. The middle section of the bridge had been washed away. A dispatch from Glenwood Springs, Colorado, says Brig. -Gen. F. M. Rear don has sent a message to Gov. Adams stating that Major Lislie has Colorow corraled with 200 bucks, and that Ken dall has only 52 men. Governor Adams was urged to go to Glenwood Springs, as an emergenoy exists which requires his presence at once. Gen. Terry tele graphed from Chicago to Adjutant General Drum that as the trouble is en tirely within the boundaries of the State of Colorado, and has arisen from an attempt to execute the process of a civil court of that State, he cannot see how the troops of the United States can be lawfully used in aid of tbe sheriff unless the Legislature or Governor of Colorado shall represent to the Presi dent that an insurrection exists and shall call for aid. The only course of action that appears to be feasible is to Induce the State authorities to suspend the execution of their proceis until an effort can be made by United States authority to Indue the Indians to re turn Jo their homes. f Ptbllo Address.
